Advantages: Interesting characters, well acted

Disadvantages: Long drawn out simple plot

No Country For Old Men was released in 2007 and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The Coen brothers seemed to have sparked a bit of a Marmite debate within the film industry, you either love or hate their films! I have to confess I haven't seen that many of their films but I am still undecided and seem to be a 'Marmite' tolerater rather than a lover or hater! This film seems to be yet another one with a real didvide in opinion from its viewers!

The film is based in the outbacks of Texas back in 1980 where Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) is deer hunting. He misses his chosen target but on his travels through the desert wilderness he comes upon a group of abandoned vehicles. On closer inspection he discovers that the vehicles are surrounded by dead bodies which are the aftermath of a bloody drugs shootout. Llewelyn cautiously searches the area and comes across a black briefcase which contains two million dollars. He is sure there are no witnesses so he decides to take the money and return to his wife at home. Unknown to Llewelyn is that the bag of money has a tracking device in it which is being chased by psychopath Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardhem). Llewelyn has sent his wife to her mums as he is aware of the threat to their lives when he begins to realise that he is being chased. The local sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) is also on the case and tries to track down both the psychopathic killer and Llelwelyn fearful for his safety.

The film overall has no plot other than Llewelyn being chased by Anton and basically playing a cat and mouse game for the money. For a film that is two hours long I would expect a few more twists and turns in the plot but unfortunately it is just one story line drawn out over this two hour period. I did get quite involved with the characters in the film as there are so few of them so you get the chance to understand a bit about what makes them tick. From this point of view I liked the film as there is nothing more frustrating than trying to follow lots of different characters over intertwining stories and trying to piece it all together at the end!

The character of Anton is quite an interesting one to say the least! He is obviously of very high intellect but his strange appearance and page boy style bob leads his poor victims into a false sense of security. His character is portrayed in a way that you really want to get inside his mind and understand why he is the way he is but unfortunately the film does not deliver the answers you are looking for! Not wanting to give away any part of the ending, you will be left empty at the end of this film with a lot of unanswered questions!

This film is unique in one sense that there is no real soundtrack to it. There is a lot of silence in the film and this adds to the suspense but sometimes it is just downright annoying! With silent suspense like this in a film you expect to be scared out of your wits with a loud bang but this only happens on one occasion in this film! I like to be surprised in films but this was certainly not one that delivered in this areas! I became so numb to the shooting and blood shed in the end I actually found it a bit boring!

Overall I would say that this is a very simple and raw film. It is the story of two 'hard men' who are both battling to keep hold of a huge amount of money and will basically go to any means to keep it. Apart form this there is no other twist or turn in the plot and I found this quite disappointing. Towards the end of the film I have to confess that I was getting quite bored and found the ending very uninspiring. I have to say that I did not dislike this film, nor did I like it! I don't like to sit on the fence but this film left me feeling very empty at the end with no real opinion! I couldn't help but feel that I had just wasted two hours of my life on a rubbish film, yet another part of me thought, hey, it was something different and that is often a pleasant distraction in life! I cannot say really that I would recommend this film but it is certainly sure to create a divided opinion!

Summary: Another film with divided opinions!
