Released in 2001, No Mans Land is an amazing film and worthy winner of the 2001 Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. Directed by Bosnian director Danis Tanovic this is a sadly much overlooked film which, with so much war and fighting going on today, more people really need to see. So, being a foreign language film (Serbian) with English subtitles this may put off those after an easy watch. This film whilst having subtitles has such a simple plot set up that it is easy to follow. The film, which has the backdrop of the war in the Balkans between the Serbs and Bosnians, does not go into any depth or detail about the history of the war or politics of the ... "Neutrality does not exist in the face of murder. Doing nothing to stop it is, in fact, choosing. It is not being neutral". The reason the UN is useless on military issues is because that's the way the big countries want it as controlling members so to evade action that's needed to carry out its mandate. No one wants the responsibility of taking action over wars in Africa so make the bureaucracy as cumbersome as possible so things won't get done. They fund it so they expect it to back their decisions, how ever controversial, the big five on the Security Council also the world's biggest arms exporters. China quietly arms the Sudanese genocide in ... Read the complete review

No Man's Land is a film by Bosnian director Danis Tanovic that came out in 2001 in most of the world but 2002 in the UK, picking up an amazing 43 awards and winning the Best Foreign Language Film of 2001 at the Oscars. No Man's Land is partially in English and French but largely in Serbian with subtitles. No Man's Land is filmed in the thick of the Balkan War and does show the occasional piece of footage from the time but mostly focuses on a scenario where a Bosnian Serb and two Bosniaks (muslim Bosnians) are stranded in a trench between enemy lines (thus the title!), the mood constantly changes between them as they argue, insult each other and also find some ... I had never heard of this film but my husband and I have been going through a phase of watching all sorts of Eastern European conflict films as we have been travelling a lot recently and its a way of understanding why the people are the way they are. This film was something of a gem. I found the film equally humorous and depressing. It captures both the despair of conflict and the very real element of human nature, the real stories behind the death tolls. A really interesting idea for a film because it challenges how the UN deals with a particularly difficult situation and a technically impossible problem to solve in relation to the central plot ... This is a brilliant film, it shows how pointless war can be and how people who one day were neighbours can literally be trying to kill one another the next day. The movie is based in Bosnia during the civil war with the Bosnians on one side and the Serbians on the other. When a group of bosnians go to join the frontline they get lost in fog and end up stumbling across the enemy, a battle ensues and one of them jumps into a trench for cover, he's now in the area between the two controlled territories (known as no mans land). A Serbian soldier now also ends up in there with him and neither can escape for fear of being shot by either their own side or the enemy. The two ... Read the complete review
