This quirky television show follows new doctor Joel Flieshman, a New Yorker in a small Alaskan town trying to pay off his college loans. Working in this town will forgive all his school debts. One of comedy's eternal staples is the fish out of water gimmick. Add a touch of eccentricity and what do you get? Northern Exposure, for one. Northern Exposure originally aired in 1990, and it was not a show that network bosses expected to soar.
