Advantages: funny
Disadvantages: none
This is a romantic comedy that stars Hugh Grant as a simple book-shop owner, who falls in love with Anna Scott, the most famous actress in the world.
I am not really a soppy person, but I love this film! There's something about it that works for me, and luckily for you I know what it is. The thing I love about it is the way it is believable; the Anna Scott character (played by Julia Roberts) is really just Julia Roberts. The issue of famous people living restricted lives but being real and nice people underneath the paparrazi is really appealing, and this film explores it brilliantly.
Add to that the fact that Hugh Grant gives a sterling showing as his usual bumbling self, and the supporting cast are just great, and you've got a winning feel good film. Rhys Ifans is particularly funny, and this is the film that first brought him to my eyes.
The two major themes are love and comedy, and really that means it's a winner in appealing to both sexes. Men who love comedy will laugh at the silliness of it, whereas the girls can swoon (or the other way round maybe). It really does have something for everyone.
Surprisingly, it's over 2 hours long, which is pretty lengthy for a rom com but it works, and it really is a whole lot of fun to watch.
All in all an excellent rom-com that is skyrocketed to success by having A Lister celeb Julia Roberts play basically herself in the joint lead role.
Summary: do it
