Nurse Betty is a dark, comedy thriller which has you laughing one minute at sitting on the edge of your seat the next. Nurse Betty, played by Rene Zellweger of Bridget Jones' Diary fame, is married to Del, a second-hand car dealer, and lives in a small town. She works as a waitress and dreams of running away with her TV idol, Dr. David Ravell (Morgan Freeman), who is the leading man in a soap opera. Charlie is a hit man who dreams of doing one last 'big' job and then retiring to Florida. Betty's husband sets up a drugs deal and that's where Charlie comes into the story. The drugs have been stolen and Charlie and his trainee sidekick are ... Read the complete review

If you like your humor laced with savagery, you'll probably love Nurse Betty. If you don't, you still won't waste your time. Director Neil LaBute's earlier films, In the Company of Men and Your Friends and Neighbors, pulsed with frightening emotional and physical brutality. He has a mean streak. So prepare yourself to watch while one man is scalped and others are shot. And, remember, this is a comedy. It is also a tragedy, and there was no need to force the audience into a state of full-time apprehension about the bloody events that he uses to trigger story shifts. Talk about a delicate balance. The gossamer line between fantasy and reality ... Read the complete review

For months I had been put off this film by the cover of the video in the rental shop. A pretty grinning nurse beamed at me from the centre, flanked on either side by two men. It looked puerile, it looked zany and it looked madcap. I don?t like puerile, I don?t like zany and I don?t like madcap! On my last visit to the rental shop I had the sense to examine the video more closely. Well my flabber was ghasted as I realised that the nurse was Rene Zellwegger and the two accompanying males were Morgan Freeman (for whom I have a great deal of respect) and Chris Rock. Upon reading the synopsis I was promised black humour (just my sort of thing) and a story that ... Read the complete review

This really is a strange hybrid of a film. don't get me wrong, I really like it, but what a strange package. The title and packaging of the box are misleading, this is neither a blue movie about nurses, or a nice romantic comedy(given away by the 18 certificate). Betty (played by Renee Zellwegger) works in a coffe house and has an appalling slob of a husband. She is everybody's friend and the one thing she really loves in life is her favourite soap opera about a hospital in california. Things change dramatically for her as her cheating husband is brutally killed in front of her eyes. Betty completely loses it and begins her delusion that she is a nurse, she ... Most people watch soaps to escape from reality, to live in another world for half an hour most weekdays. Much the same reason they also watch films so a movie about a soap opera addict should blow their minds but maybe because it’s a bit too close to home. The addict in question is Betty Sizemore (Renee Zellweger) and the movie is Nurse Betty. Upon release it was a quiet little film that nevertheless found critical acclaim for its blend of thriller, comedy and road movie. A bit of a strange mix but it somehow works. The plot line is not unlike soap itself. Betty is a waitress in a small Kansas town nursing ambitions to be a, erm, nurse. She is well liked ... Read the complete review
