One Missed Call is an American remake of a Japanese film, with the same premise. The film was released in 2008 and was directed by Eric Valette and written by Andrew Klavan and stars Edward Burns and Shannyn Sossamon. Hollywood as in recent times had a strange habit of copying horror films that have come from Japan and China, notably the Ring and The grudge, which were great box office successes, both domestically and internationally. I didn't actually watch this film, until last month when I rented it on DVD.
The Plot is simple and pretty much comes from the title, one missed call. The film is about Beth Raymond played by Shannyn Sossamon, a university student who is terrified for her life after some of her closest friends are mysteriously spine chillingly killed by a phone call, which is from them supposedly in the future. The phone conversation lists the date and time they supposedly die, along with how they actually die. After the death of her friends, three of which she personally witnessed herself, Beth decides to make the police aware of the strange occurrences. The police think she's crazy and delusional and simply dismiss her claims, however Detective Jack Andrews (Edward Burns), believes he case, as he also thinks the mysterious death of her sister has something to do with these phone calls.
The two eventually track down the calls to women named Marie Layton, Marie was supposedly abusing her children for attention. They soon find that one of her daughters Ellie died of an asthma attack, whilst her sister is in a foster home, after the mother went missing.
The film follows the journey of Beth as she tried to find the mysterious force behind all these deaths, can she save herself in time, or will she have the same faith as her friends, receiving one last phone call and then mysteriously dying.
I found the film to be profoundly boring from start to finish, the film is a copy of so many other films that have been made, and it's just a case of adding a different twist and scenario into it. In the Ring, people have three days after receiving a phone call then they die, and that plot revolves around a woman trying to find the force behind the killings. In the Grudge, the character experiences a force in a house and deaths start happening. This film is like all of them, you get a phone call and then you die however there is always one sole that tries to find the truth.
The film had a basic sub plot, but the horror and suspense in the film was awful, there were no really scare moments like other horror films, it didn't stand out, it didn't make you wanting more, and it didn't scare you to the point that you wet yourself. The character performances were ok, nothing really special, the cast obviously wasn't a well known one, and it's just a chance for relatively unknown actors to make a name for themselves.
Overall a nothing special film, which you should only really make and effort to watch if you have nothing better to do. The story has no flow to it, it lacks consistency, and it isn't scary at all. Stay away from this film, or you might get a phone call from special force out their.
