"The Jolly Boy's Outing" is an 80 minute long special of the long-running hit BBC comedy Only Fools and Horses, with this episode first shown in 1989. Although the special is fantastic, this DVD proves to be disappointing. In this episode, Del, Rodney, Uncle Albert, Mike, Boysie, Trigger and most of the male members of the series visit Margate for their traditional summer holiday. The females stay at home having a more peaceful time. Of course, with Del organising the trip quite a lot goes wrong! Despite some problems getting there with a drunken bus driver Del and the rest of the group enjoy a day out at the seaside resort. Trigger looks ... Read the complete review

As you are probably all aware, I am a massive Only Fools and Horses fan. I had always watched them when I was young however it was not until they more or less came to an end with the Christmas Trilogy back in 1996, that I took a more active interest in these loveable characters. Each episode features highly in my opinion however this particular feature length epiosde The Jolly Boys Outing is by far in my top five of episodes, if not within the top three. This episode was first aired in the UK as a Christmas Special in 1989, as in my opinion is the only episode that features all characters together, to give this extra glory in itself. The Jolly Boys ... Read the complete review

This is one of my favourite Only Fools and Horses episodes and it was great to see it again on TV a couple of weeks ago. Wheeler dealer Del and his brother Rodney get to escape from their Peckham flat along with Uncle Albert after Del organises the Nags Head beano to the seaside for the day. Needless to say things do not go smoothly especially when at the first stop at a pub for lunch the driver gets absolutely smashed and is not fit to walk let alone drive. Things get worse later on when the coach explodes and the lads are al stuck for the night with no accomodation booked. This is a superbly crafted comedy with some great acting, David Jason as ... The 'Jolly Boys Outing' delivers all viewers have come to expect from Only Fools and Horses: carefully crafted storylines, plenty of slapstick comedy and numerous witty one-liners. Of particular mention is the moment Rodney accidentally knocks a policeman over with a football, the moment where Rodney punches his wife's boss in the face, in the mistaken belief that they are having an illicit affair, and of course, the notorious exploding bus incident. The comic elements of this episode are wonderfully set-off by an apt musical score, which creates an exceptionally uplifting episode. The songs chosen (particularly 'Help' by the Beatles and ... The Jolly Boys Outing is one of my favourite Only Fools and Horses feature-length episodes but strangely enough the DVD version is worse than the video release and tv versions. The reason for this is that they miss out a good portion of one of the more important parts, a scene where the two comical brothers are discussing relationship problems. When a show is relatively stationery as Only Fools and Horses is in Peckham with the pub, market stall and perhaps the odd Indian restaurant or church thrown in, it's bound to be fun to see them leave their usual surroundings. This is the case when Del organises the yearly beanie - a boys outing to Margate. ... Read the complete review
