Open Range (DVD) ... Duvall ... / DVD released 31 May, 2004 at Universal Pictures UK / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Released almost exactly 11 years after Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, Kevin Costner's Open Range proved yet again that the Western is the classic American genre. Costner's first film since 1997's ill-fated The Postman returns the actor/director of Dances With Wolves to the open prairies of America--in this case the free-range frontier of 1882--where legal "free-grazing" cattle drives were falling prey to empire-building land-owners. In the wake of territorial murder, free-grazing cowboys Boss (Robert Duvall) and Charley (Costner) seek vengeful justice against the ruthless rancher (Michael Gambon) who threatens their law-abiding survival. A feisty ally (the late Michael Jeter, in his next-to-final film role) and a doctor's sister (Annette Bening) offer support during climactic shootouts, masterfully staged with the shock and suddenness of real-life gunfire. While it lacks the thematic impact of Eastwood's masterpiece, this handsome production!--rich in character development and thick-hided humour--redeemed Costner's directorial career with a well-told story (by Craig Storper, based on Lauran Paine's novel The Open Range Men), flawless performances, and stunning Canadian locations. --Jeff Shannon

... for his own cattle. A gunfight ensues. It seems to me that Mr Costner got just about everything right in this film. Casting, script, timing and photography cannot be faulted. The west looks gorgeous with the plains depicted as a green ocean, a garden of Eden. Interestingly the colour drains from the screen when the action moves into the town. Costner putting his ecological credentials into a statement about mans corruption of nature ? Hmmm, perhaps, I will leave that to somebody with a bit more patience than myse...more

Premium Review Open Range (DVD): "people round here dont take to freegrazers mister" (459 words)

This is a modern classic by anybodies standard. Every so often somebody decides that the western genre is dead and calls time on a century of gun-totin action. Quite why they feel the need to state this is beyond me. There will always be westerns as long as people are fascinated with that period of history. Just as importantly there will always be westerns whilst there are Directors as talented as Mr Costner. This movie is the best we have seen for many years, in fact the best since Costners previous effort, Dances With Wolves. The plot is simplicity itself. Cowboys driving their herd across the plains fall foul of the local baddie who ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Costner + Cowboys and Gunfights = Perfect Film! (842 words)

Open Range is another of my bargain buys and this time I was very impressed, not only with the fact that Kevin Costner is in the film but it was also a good film to watch. The film stars Boss, played by Robert Duval, Charlie, played by Kevin Costner, Buttons and Mose who are free grazers and spend their time travelling around letting their cattle graze off other peoples land. When they arrive in a particular town the trouble starts. Boss sends Mose into the town for some supplies but he does not return and Boss and Charlie go to look for him. They find Mose locked up in jail after getting into a fight with some men. Mose has been beaten and hit ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Open Range (DVD): Costner strikes it lucky on the Open Range (627 words)

The other night I put my feet up with a good bottle of wine and scoured my DVD collection for something I was in the mood for. A while back, I had seen 'Open Range' for sale in a Virgin outlet store for £2, and thought 'Why not?' Deciding I was in the mood for a Western, I popped it in the DVD player and sat back, wondering how long I would last before getting bored. Yet I was surprised to find myself, half an hour later, on the edge of my seat, following a good plotline and some brilliant acting. Brief Overview 'Open Range' is the tale of a group of free grazing cattle owners. It has Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall as the billing leads, with a ...  Read the complete review
