... gore. Daniel Kintner (Daniel Travis) and Susan Watkins (Blanchard Ryan) are a couple very much in love, who simply can't find enough time for each other because of their hectic working lives. However, they decide to have some time away together, and so go scuba diving with a group of twenty people. However, they are left behind when the boat leaves, and so when they resurface, they are left stranded in the middle of the ocean, with nothing but each other. Ironically, they'll have all the time together they could ever want...more

Premium Review Open Water (DVD): Just when you thought it was safe to watch low-budget dross ... (666 words)

Rating:

HMMMMMMM.....where to start.......well I'd like to say I wholeheartedly disagree with my other fellow critics and that this film was actually rather good. Unfortunately I would be lying through my teeth which is something this film is sadly very lacking in. In fact there is more chance of you suffering a fatal bite from your pet goldfish Monty than getting any kind of chills from this lacklustre attempt of Blair Witch in the Water... It starts off with a young couple packing to go on a diving holiday- filmed on video camera to make it more authentic and with two leads you instantly fail to warm to and who couldn't act their way out of an episode of Echo ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review All alone in open, shark-infested water (1103 words)

Call me weird but I seem to be among the few poor souls who actually enjoyed Open Water. While I do agree that the film could have used some major polishing, especially in the opening scenes, and that the acting was far from being perfect, I still watch this movie over and over again whenever I have time to. I do admit, this is not an easy movie to watch. Unless you really get into the depth of the situation, I would be hard to get over the various flaws in acting, sound and basic camera control. However, like I said, I still maintain that it is quite an artful movie in the sense that it was not only based upon a real-life incident but there are various thematic features ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Open Water (DVD): Sh.. Sh,,, Sh.,, Shark? (1272 words)
by - written on 22/09/09 (Very useful, 58 readings)
Rating:

Think of Shark films and you automatically think of Jaws and, perhaps, Deep Blue Sea. Open Water is different. It takes a more measured approach to the idea of sharks. Attacks are not personalised, there are no violent, frenzied shark attacks, very little blood (and certainly no severed limbs or fountains of gore) and nothing blows up. Instead, Open Water takes a very simple premise: two scuba divers are accidentally left behind when their boat departs without them, leaving them alone and adrift in shark infested waters. For the bulk of the film, that is it. We watch the two divers as their plight grows increasingly perilous and desperation starts ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Over an hour of.........nothing! (400 words)

Oh dear! There you go: review over. What? That's not enough? Okay, let me explain..... I've had this film on the shelf now for a couple of years. I paid £2 for it, and in my honest and unsarcastic (for once) opinion, this is too much. Below average acting and directing, dodgy camera work, and quite possibly the most boring portrayal of a true story, should really sum up this film. A blessing was that it was only just over an hour long, but there were parts of the film where an attempt was made at effect with long periods of silence, and all it did was send me to sleep.....literally! Open Water is based on the story of two people who got left behind ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Open Water (DVD): Open Water (300 words)
by - written on 31/08/08 (Very useful, 55 readings)
Rating:

I am such a wimp. I am terrified of everything slightly creepy, and when I say everything - I mean pretty much everything. Except for this. Initially I can't say that I was a very happy bunny being forced by my friend to watch a film about some people getting terrorised by sharks. Knowing my character, I would never want to go in water again. EVER. However, despite these original thoughts, after having watched "Open Water", I couldn't have felt less scared in all my life. Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis (played by themselves) decide to take a holiday in order to take time from their hectic lives. Being certified scuber divers, ...  Read the complete review
