Whatever the motivations were, the character is fairly typical of these tragedies - a loner, obsessed with guns who doesn't take kindly to anybody interfering with his life. There's nothing more sobering than real life. On 13th and 14th November 1990, a tiny New Zealand town named Aramoana was rocked by a violent killing spree. A psychologically unhinged local man named David Gray took and gun and went on a murderous rampage, killing thirteen people in the process. Out of the Blue is a compelling dramatisation of the events and of the lives of those affected by the tragedy. The director and writer, Robert Sarkies, was previously unheard of and hasn't released a film since, but his work on Out of the Blue betrays a sensitivity to the subject matter that makes this uncomfortable but essential viewing material.
