... Caviezel. The film takes place during the age of the Vikings, 709AD to be precise, yet, incredulously, a spaceship crashes on Earth, and aboard it is Kainan (Caviezel), a hardened and skillful soldier who has travelled from a very distant planet, as well as an alien called a Moorwen that has stowed away on the ship unbeknowest to Kainan. However, it isn't long before King Rothgar finds Kainan and captures him, believing him to be a hostile. Once the Moorwen escapes and begins massacring the village, though, the tables turn, ...more

Premium Review Outlander (DVD): Low Hopes = Good Result (712 words)
by - written on 29/10/09 (Very useful, 13 readings)
Rating:

You know that feeling you get when you see a trailer for a film that just looks like it's everything that's wrong with modern cinema? It looks like it's been created by a dozen studio execs sitting around a boardroom table picking 10 films that have done well or are considered to be 'good' (by whatever authority decides these things) and deciding to chuck them all in a salad tosser to see what it looks like. I got that feeling when I saw the trailer for Outlander. Jim Caviezel crash lands his spaceship in ancient Vikingland and brings with him a terror from space! Vikings must chop it's gribbly head off with mighty axes! You know that feeling you get when, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A twist on Viking history and myth. (789 words)

I had never heard of this movie until its release on DVD on Tuesday and so I had no expectations, but when I seen the trailer on IMDb it caught my curiosity. In this mix of Science Fiction and Fantasy I found an epic story loosely based upon Viking history (not much) merging with not so original Sci-fi horror. Story Sometime in 8th century Norway near a few Viking colonies a unidentified flying object falls from the sky and crashes into a lake. A man named Kainan (James Caviezel) that looks just like you or me emerges into a more primative world than his own and finds himself alone. But he is not alone. Something has killed everyone on his ship and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Outlander (DVD): Predator meets Beowulf (810 words)
by - written on 06/05/09 (Very useful, 197 readings)
Rating:

This is a film that seems to borrow from Predator, Alien, Reign of Fire and Beowulf, although it's not quite as good as any of them. Kainan (Jim Kavaziel), a soldier from a faraway planet, crash lands in Norway in 709 AD. On board his ship is a ferocious alien creature called a Moorwen that has stowed away on his ship, and has now escaped. After a computer crash course in the local language Kainan sets off in search of the Moorwen, following a trail of devastation. However, before he can kill the Moorwen he is captured by Viking warrior Wulfric (Jack Huston) who takes him off to his fortress. He is questioned about people who have vanished from the village ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Outlander (DVD): OUTLANDER (225 words)
by - written on 18/08/09 (Very useful, 17 readings)
Rating:

Howard McCain directs this action and adventure movie OUTLANDER. The film centres around Jim Caviezel's character a spaceman called Kainan whose spaceship crashes when all fellow members of his ship are killed. Somehow, Kainan crashes in a Norwegian Fjord in 709 AD. The locals capture Kainan and interrogate as to how he got here. Kainan tell's the vikings that he is tracking a vicious monster on their island. After some convincing the Vikings agree to help Kainan find and kill the monster, but can the two parties unite. This film features Vikings, spaceships, monsters and explosions so the special effects are terific. Nonetheless the plot is ...  Read the complete review
