Advantages: Great acting, great movie
Disadvantages: Fake Irish accents!
*****WHAT IS PS, I LOVE YOU?*****
PS, I Love You is a 2007 film, based on the novel of the same name by Cecelia Ahern, starring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler as Holly Kennedy and Gerry Kennedy respectively.
When Gerry dies of a brain tumour, Holly finds it difficult to move on until salvation comes in the form of letters from Gerry. Each letter has a request to try and help Holly move on and at the end of these letters they are signed "PS, I Love You".
*****MY THOUGHTS*****
When any novel is made into a movie people usually say, "Oh, the book was better!" however I loved both the movie adaptation and the book of PS, I Love You.
Whereas I hated Confessions of a Shopaholic being set in New York, I preferred PS, I Love You being set in NYC and found it worked well. Especially since Ireland was mentioned and seen in the film thanks to one of Gerry's letters.
I know a lot of people aren't a fan of Hilary Swank and romantic comedies and Hilary Swank in general but I'm a huge fan and loved her as Holly. I think she and Gerard Butler were perfectly cast as Holly and Gerry and I think they got on really well together. My only problem with Gerard Butler was his accent which was so fake but that was it.
I though Gina Gershon and Lisa Kudrow were perfectly cast as Holly's friends Sharon and Denise as well as Harry Connick Jr. as Daniel, James Marsters as John and Kathy Bates as Holly's mum. I liked Jeffrey Dean Morgan as William but, again, the accent was terrible.
If you liked the book and can separate the movie and the book - even though there are lots of similarities - you'll enjoy the movie. If you cry at anything you'll probably need the tissues but the movie will also make you laugh.
Maybe it isn't an Oscar-winning film but it is what it is and I loved it. I thought the soundtrack throughout the film was great and I thought the acting was great. Sure, the accents were stupid but I can forgive that.
It's quite a long movie at 2hrs 5mins but it flies by.
This is definitely one of the chick-lit-turned-movies worth seeing.
