P.S. I Love You (DVD)
Advantages: Great story, fab acting
Disadvantages: None for me
I had heard many great things about both the film and the book 'P.S I love you' the book written by Cecelia Ahern. Usually I like to read the books before I see the films but as the film was on TV last weekend I decided to record it and I finally settled down to watch it this morning.
We are introduced to Holly and Gerry, a young married couple living in New York. Just like any other young couple they argue and bicker but deep down they both know the other loves them greatly. Unfortunately, Gerry dies at aged just 35.
Holly doesn't know what to do with herself. The one thing in life that she adored has been snatched away and as any wife would do, she falls into a deep depression, mourning for her lost husband. Her friends and family are worried about her but all she wants is Gerry.
Holly reaches her 30th birthday and plans on spending it alone. However, her friends and family turn up with gifts and then a delivery arrives - a cake from Gerry. At first Holly thinks a friend has done this - trying to be kind but in reality she thinks it is a bit sick. However, there is a Dictaphone attached with a message from Gerry. He tells her everything that would comfort a widow, that he loves her, he misses her and he wants her to get her glad rags on and go out. He then tells her she will receive a number of letters from him...
I loved the idea of this film and it brought a tear to my eye just thinking about it! I immediately felt for Holly as soon as Gerry died and I cant imagine what she was going through or how she was feeling. I felt protective over Holly, as although she had great friends and family around her she felt very alone and I was desperate for her to start feeling better.
The message from Gerry was like a weight lifted from Holly and you could immediately see a change in her character which I found really heartwarming and I was so happy for Holly.
The acting in the film is superb. Hilary Swank plays Holly and she does a brilliant job of portraying a young widow who is really struggling to come to terms with her husbands death. I imagine unless you have been through it yourself you don't have a clue how they would feel so Hilary Swank has done a great job. Her performance was very convincing and moved me to tears a few times throughout the film. Supporting actors include Gerard Butler as Gerry, Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gurshon who are equally as strong. Gerard Butler who makes short appearances throughout the film portrays a loveable man who you can really see loved Holly.
The plot of the film flows really well. The film follows Holly's life in the year after Gerry's death and shows some tough times for her. Of course she has her ups and downs but Gerry is always in her mind and to be honest, I think she coped a lot better than most would. The film is quite long at 126 minutes but I found this to be the perfect length with everything being covered. The ending of the film was good. Some aspects of it were predictable but there was a nice little surprise that bought a smile to my face and made me really feel as though everything was wrapped up well.

I really enjoyed this film and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to you all. I usually prefer comedy but I enjoyed watching this and it really did make me thankful for what I have. I adored the character of Holly and think Hilary Swank did a fantastic job of portraying her. If you haven't seen it, I really recommend you check it out.
