Advantages: Great acting, nice storyline

Disadvantages: Might appeal more to women than men

I only got round to watching P.S. I Love You despite reading the book pretty soon after it was released. I was never a huge fan of the book if I am totally honest. But after watching the movie, I have to say I am actually inspired to go away and read the book again, as I found the film to be really quite enjoyable!

P.S. I Love You stars Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler as Holly and Gerry in the lead roles. They are a young married couple, who fell in love young, and are trying to make their way in life. Sadly, quite early on in the movie, Gerry dies, and Holly is left feeling completely lost and unable to get on with things. However, it seems Gerry has not truly left, as he leaves a number of letters behind for Holly, to help her get through. Watching Holly read his letters and attempt to move on in life really makes for a heart-warming couple of hours (in my opinion anyway!).

Despite having a storyline that focuses on death, the movie is actually quite light and features some humorous moments. Scenes with two of Holly's best friends, for example, played by Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe from Friends' and Gina Gershon (less famous but starred in Ugly Betty, amongst other things) are really funny at times. Ultimately though the movie is about loss and I did find myself having a blub here and there! But that is not a bad thing and should indicate that this film was made well, and the acting was convincing.

I thought that Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler did really well in their roles. I thought Swank did the part of grieving widow particularly well and I warmed to her. Although Butler dies quite early on in the film, we see him throughout during flashbacks experienced by Holly, and in these, he is great. But then I am a Butler fan!

So is this movie a chick flick? Well yes I suppose so, but it's funny and so I think most people would enjoy it. I would recommend it to fans of any genre, and say that it is more, and better than your average rom-com.
Thanks for reading!

Summary: Good viewing
