I have always been a fan of scary films. But as I've got older, I've found myself hiding behind my hands less and less. The reputation of this film had me wondering whether it could be the one to bring back that child-hood fear we all so fondly remember.
Firstly I must say that I've seen the film both at the cinema and on DVD. I found these experiences to be completely different. The premise of the film is that a tape has been found by police. The tape had recorded the events that occur in the house of a young couple, Micah and Katie. The two main actors are unknown, which is common in horror films these days. They also use their own names in the film, which is slightly strange, but I guess it adds to the authenticity.
The film documents the couples investigation into something that has been disturbing Katie ever since she was a child. To start off Micah seems to see the whole situation as a joke which we are lead to believe antagonises whatever is haunting her.
There are two distinct types of footage in the film. Firstly you have the couple in the daytime/ evening where they are living their lives, and often talking about the goings on in a rather matter of fact way. These parts of the film were a little annoying at first, but they did explain the back story quite well.
Then you have the night time footage, where the camera is set up at the end of the couples bed whilst they sleep. The bedroom door is kept open, and a light in the hall way kept on. There is a clock on the camera. You never actually see any sort of spirit in the film. Just the result of what the thing is supposed to be doing. These tend to be my sort of films, especially when you take into account that most of the haunting occurs when the couple are asleep. The fact that there is no background music also makes the film so much more scary, especially during the night-time footage.
I believe there are a few different endings to the film and i've been told the one I saw is the best one. It definitely does not disappoint.
Seeing the film in the cinema definitely heightened the experience. I went with my girlfriend and another couple. We'd been out for dinner so we saw a late showing at about 11.45. There was a technical fault which meant we had to wait a further 30 minutes for the film to start which added to the tension. I was genuinely scared by certain parts of the film, and the girls were terrified. It made for some interesting pranks on the taxi ride home. The DVD was slightly disappointing, perhaps because I'd already seen the film, perhaps because the atmosphere wasn't there.
If you like a scare I definitely recommend this film. It is by far the scariest film i've seen in years. I would say that you should try and create some sort of atmosphere if watching the DVD. Get a few friends round, turn off the lights and tune in. I hope you won't be disappointed.
Summary: Great if you like a scare.
