Paris, Texas (DVD)

Paris, Texas (DVD) ... released 02 September, 2002 at Starz Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Something like a perfect artistic union is achieved in the major components of Paris, Texas: the twang of Ry Cooder's guitar, the lonely light of Robbie Muller's camera, the craggy landscape of Harry Dean Stanton's face. In his greatest role, longtime character actor Stanton plays a man brought back to his old life after wandering in the desert (or somewhere) for four years. He has a 7-year-old son to get to know, and his wife has gone missing. The material is much in the wanderlust spirit of director Wim Wenders, working from a script by Sam Shepard and L.M. Kit Carson. If the long climactic conversation between Stanton and Nastassja Kinski renders the movie uneven and slightly inscrutable, it's hard to think of a more fitting ending--and besides, the achingly empty American spaces stick longer in the memory than the dialogue. Winner of the top prize at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. --Robert Horton

... was totally and utterly engrossed. It is true that Paris Texas is a very laid-back film, and to some it may appear slow-moving, but it isn't supposed to be an action-packed melee of screeching car chases, partying and other high jinx. Paris Texas is a film which does need some degree of concentration whilst watching it, and its incredible power comes not from action and "doing", but from serenity, calmness, and "being". The story is highly emotive, but the emotion is portrayed quietly, sen...more

I won't in my review describe the details of who produced, directed etc. the film as the previous two people's reviews carry all the information needed in that area. Firstly I will say that I am somewhat disappointed to learn that a DVD of the film Paris Texas was given away free in a newspaper. It's not that I resent the film being free; more that I feel it is a true class film, and there seems to be something a bit tacky about items given away free with newspapers and magazines - I don't feel Paris Texas anywhere near deserves to be dropped into that category. Correct me somebody please if I am wrong. I first watched Paris Texas back in 1986, ...  Read the complete review

I’m not really a movie buff, and tend to stick to the rather mainstream – or, occasionally, whatever happens to be on TV – in my viewing. In fact, when my flatmate suggested watching one of her ‘free with the Times’ DVDs on a quiet Saturday evening, I’d never even heard of Paris, Texas, despite it winning awards at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Cannes. Then again, I was only two when it was released, in 1984, so I suppose that’s some excuse… All I did know about the film when we started was that it was a ‘road trip movie’, though this didn’t prove entirely accurate. Well, sure, there were road trips involved, but the film wasn’t really about them. Rather, it ...  Read the complete review

This film produced and directed by Wim Wenders’ is probably one of most well known, critically acclaimed, and successful movie, winning a number of international prizes including the Cannes Palm D’or (1984), Bafta, Berlin Silver Bear, French Film Critic’s prize). Screen play by playwright Sam Sheppard soundtrack by Ry Cooder. I saw a promotional copy that at 147 minutes was a little on the long side. The film is suitable only for person’s 15 years and over. ***THE STORY*** This haunting story turned road movie tells the tale of Travis, a man lost in his own in his own private hell. I quote from the cover. “ Presumed dead for four years, he ...  Read the complete review
