Advantages: Fun, great acting, brilliant soundtrack & costumes, based on true story

Disadvantages: May stray too far from the truth!

The film 'Party Monster' is based on the true story of club kid Michael Ali who made his name in New York City in the 80's and 90's as a club promoter, who was then sent to jail for murdering his drug dealer. I didn't know much about him until I saw this movie, and I don't know how "true" the story is, but it's definitely an entertaining, fabulous film!

I think this is one of the first films Macaulay Culkin played in as an adult, and he does a brilliant job depicting the complicated personality of Michael - confused, immature, insecure, messed up, annoying - but mesmerising and adorable at the same time. Seth Green is amazing also as Michaels sidekick - they both pull it off seemingly effortlessly.

The film is filled with a range of colourful characters - and a bunch of great actors. If you're familiar with the club/drug scene you will see your friends in some of the characters! There are loads of amazing outfits, some of the original club kids are in the film to add authenticity, and they even use some real footage (of some of the raves in the 80s). If you're interested in the story its worth checking out the "shockumentary" of the same name, on which this film was based on. It's interesting to compare the two.

The soundtrack is awesome and features Ladytron, Scissor Sisters, Marylin Manson and plenty of other bands I'd never heard of, but the CD is worth buying and is a great party cd! Marylin Manson actually has a part in the film where he plays a drag queen (who dies of a drug overdose, like many of them do).

The film is quite surreal and depicts Michael's downward spiral into drug addiction and eventually murder in a way that is sad, outrageously funny, fabulous and moving at the same time. Not something that many films are able to do so brilliantly.

Summary: This film is amazing
