Excellent if not a little imaginative (Patriot Games (DVD))

Advantages: Good plot, goo acting good allround

Disadvantages: Irish problem not enough detail and is a bit farfecthed

This is a good quality action/thriller type of film and should appeal to most people. The basic plot at time is original but there are a few flaws. The basic plot follows Jack Ryan (Harrison Ford) a CIA agent. Whilst on holiday he prevents an assassination attempt upon the royal family a kills one of the assassins, he happens to be the brother of a nasty Irishman (Sean Bean) who takes up a vendetta against Ryan and his family. For the rest of the film Bean and his group attempt to harm his family and basically there is room for a few close shaves before a powerful ending where Bean lays siege to Ryan’s home.

The overall plot is good and as you’d expect the acting is of a high quality. Also the few effects there are, are really excellent and generally the film is very powerful, however the plot has the whole Irish problem (Loyalist, Republican conflict etc.) and although the realisation of Northern Irish problems is a good idea, it is quite conveyed as it should and doesn’t give enough background. The film really focuses on the American aspect which I would expect but it portrays Englishmen and Irishmen in quite a poor light.

However this is an excellent and well thought our film and although a little farfetched is a pretty chunky effort, although not quite as good as the book (but what film ever is?)
