Advantages: great comical entertainment, great stunts and a fien plot line
Disadvantages: none for me at all
At the moment Blockbusters are having quite a good deal on there DVDs, offering 5 dvds for a tenner for four nights. So I chose a few movies that grabbed my attention, one of them being a movie that I had heard a lot of good things about, that movie being Paul Blart Mall Cop.
Director: Steve Carr
Producers: Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Barry Bernardi
Writers: Kevin James and Nick Bakay
Stars: Kevin James, Jayma Mays, Keirs O'Donnell, Peter Gerety Bobby Cannavale and Adam Ferrara
Released in early 2009 and given a PG certificate
** Brief plot...
Paul Blart (Kevin James), who lives with his mother, (Shirley Knight), and his daughter Maya, (Raini Rodriguez), is a rather large figure of a security officer in a shopping mall, which he has been for over a decade, mainly because he keeps failing to pass the entrance test to become a New Jersey state trooper due to him being hypoglycemia.
Life seems very mundane for Blart and his day job until 'Black Friday', when a group of 'thieves', led by some one Blart knows, take over the Mall, snatching a handful of hostages on there way.
But when Blart realise that one of the hostages is Amy, (Jayma Mays), who he has a big crush on, he decides to try and rescue her from the clutches of the thieves.
Unfortunately Blart is not exactly the highly trained and physically fit fighting machine that a situation like this needs...leading to many misfortunes but he does what he can to achieve his goal, with some rather strange results.
** IN CONCLUSION...
When I rented this I was expecting a standard comedy movie with a few laughs, something maybe on the same lines as 'police academy' meets 'Ace Ventura', but it really surprised me as it turned out to be one hell of an hilarious movie than I first thought, keeping me and my family entertained for most of the 90 minutes it was running, although the first twenty minutes did seem to go a little slow at first.
In fact, as the movie progressed I couldn't help but think that this has to be the funniest movie I have seen for a long time, although I'm guessing it wont be to every ones taste.
For me I felt it was one of them movies that can be watched by anyone, even with the few scenes of alleged violence.
It is a cracking movie for all the family, I watched it with my wife and daughters, 7 and 10, and they loved it so much that my kids wanted to watch it again, so we did.
The all round acting is great for this type of movie, with Kevin James really playing the part of the security officer exceptionally well indeed, his brilliant expressions and rather agile mannerism for a big guy. Who ever decided to use this man for the part of a mad Mall security officer chose very well indeed.
Then there's the rather sexy, albeit a little strange looking Jayma Mays as Blarts shopping Mall crush, who seem to have an easy part to play but does it well enough to keep her credibility on the plus side.
The villains in this movie are more energetic than deadly, using rather simple transport methods to move around the Mall, although the way they managed to jump around like monkeys at a circus is truly amazing, I think they call this 'parkour', which does look quite impressive indeed, although I don't fancy trying it out around my local Asda.
I have always found that all movies should have at least one character that the audience members just want to grab by the throat, tossing them out of a moving train, and this movie certainly has one in the shape of Stuart, (played arrogantly well by Stephen Rannazzisi), a pen salesman with an ego the size of a cruise liner and the personality of an angry werewolf with tooth ache.
The many other characters who make the movie as funny as it is do a great job indeed, for instance Jamal Mixon is pure genius as the very full figured spice loving Leon and Adhir Kalyan as Pahud, an Indian teenager with a very big ego, are simply excellent and so weirdly hilarious indeed, it is a bit of a shame that Kalyan's character doesn't appear a little more often as he really did make me giggle.
I don't want to say too much about the 'villains' as this may spoil certain parts of the movie but there are one or two twists in this rather funny script, one of which you may predict but others that will comes as a pleasant surprise, if pleasant is the word here.
There are many funny scenes, many seeming to have a laugh at from other movies, although in a very subtle sort of way. If you have ever seen Rambo first blood and remember the part when he fell through the trees, ripping his arm open on route to the ground, and he ended up stitching the wound up, well it's scenes like this that the writers of this movie liked to play around with.
What more can I say about Mall Cop without giving away the plot..? Well, not a lot really but I do suggest that you watch this one as you will not be disappointed at all. It has everything that a good movie of its genre needs to keep the audience happy, it has thrills, humour, a rather funny selection of chases and that good dollop of romance, What more do you need to keep you entertained.
And listen out for a rather annoying ringtone which you'll probably end up humming to yourself after a while, maybe even trying to find it for your own phone.
In all a great entertaining movie for all the family giving 90 minutes of harmless fun, although one or two scenes may come across as a little child unfriendly, but nothing worth worrying about.
If you want to rent this then do so but when you decide to buy it you can grab a copy from amazon for as little as £12.00, which is a bargain indeed.
