Paul is an entry into the sci- fi comedy section of films. It is written by and stars the UK's very own Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Seth Rogen provides the voice of the title character, Paul. It mixes UK comedy with an American setting .It was released in February 2011 in the UK and currently has a rating of 7.1/10 from 66,987 users on IMDB.
Graeme Willy (Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Frost) are two sci-fi and comic book geeks from England who are also best friends. They have taken a trip to America to attend the annual San Diego comic con convention. They also plan to rent an RV and take a road trip to visit some of the major sites of extra terrestrial importance. Whilst on this road trip they witness a road crash in which they meet the foul mouthed alien Paul ( Rogen). He needs their help in escaping government agents who have held him captive for 60 years. He has escaped and is trying to get back to his mother ship. Together they try to conjure up a plan to get Paul back to the mother ship he belongs on. On the way they are chased by quite inept federal agents(one played by Jason Bateman) and also the father of a woman they have kidnapped accidently. Thus also begins plenty of alien movie jokes and clichés from the likes of Alien, ET and many others. Will the two comic book geeks help their new foul mouthed alien friend return to his mother ship?
This is an enjoyable and funny film with plenty of comedic moments to keep you amused. It begins slowly but gets better as it goes on. The story although quite predictable at times is also quite fast paced so the time does not seem to stand still for too long while watching and 104 minutes does not seem to be that long. It contains plenty of foul mouthed moments also so may not be recommended for those that are easily offended. It officially has a 15 rating due to this. The comedy works well and the film is generally a success. It is not quite in the realms of greatness but it is pretty good and will amuse most. I would overall give this film just about 4 out of 5 dooyoo stars.
