Advantages: Escapism

Disadvantages: It's too short!

I love this adaptation! No it is not completely true to the novel (which I am not actually a fan of!), nor are some pf the characters well cast, however if I am feeling down it is a great feel good film!

I know that I should possibly pontificate about its' authenticity and accuracy etc however I would recommend that any women having trouble in their love lives just put this on!

It took me a while to become absorbed by the film as it has a different feel to it than most Austen adaptations. I was a bit concerned about the casting of Anne, however Sally Hawkins was very believable. In some ways Rupert Penry-Jones was a bit of an obvious choice in terms of attracting viewers, howver I think that he also does a sterling job. The supporting cast is generally good however I agree with other reviewers that Mary Musgrove was lacking.

To enjoy this film you need to forget who wrote the novel and just give your self to the adaptation, treat it as something totally separate rather than sit there making comparisons (I prefer it to the BBC adaptation with Amanda Root).

I would definitely recommend it as a birthday present for an Austen or non-Austen fan who wants to escape for 90 minutes.

Summary: Forget it is an adaptation just enjoy it for what it is!
