Advantages: Funny, Safe, Inoffensive, Good Run Time
Disadvantages: Nothing Educational, Annoying to Adults!
You can get this DVD on it's own or in a triple pack. On it's own it costs £5.97 from Amazon or in the triple pack it costs £7.98. Please note that we bought the triple pack using vouchers from here but it is the same DVD whether you buy it in the pack or on it's own!
Firstly, it's a really nice DVD to give a little one who already likes Pingu from the telly. It's a bright blue case with a bit picture of Pingu on the front so most little ones will be able to instantly recognise him. My Grandson was very pleased to get this and at nearly 4yrs old he knows what a DVD is and roughly how to put it on! The granddaughter is on a work placement thing at the moment so Grandad is on babysitting duty quite often. What better way to get through it in one piece than to whack a DVD on and pray there are no accidents?
So we put this on together and settled down to watch it. I have to admit I had one eye on the sports pages at the back of the paper but I did watch some of this, honest. It took a few minutes to load up but then we were able to select "play all" which meant over 2hrs of Pingu without having to search for the remote at the end of each episode. The episodes could have done with being a bit more broken up though as in between each one, you just got this annoying little tune and a flashcard with Pingu the Penguin on it. So if you're not watching carefully it can be hard when to spot where to take a break. Well, most little ones need a break for the loo or a snack without the telly on I think anyway when the DVD is this long.
The episodes are all quite similar and all have the same sort of background. Also, Pingu doesn't talk - he makes penguin noises. He does a lot of slapstick style comedy though with falling about the place and the like. So from an adult point of view, it's all a bit boring to watch 2hrs of this! But from a little kid's point of view, it's a nice safe program to watch because only little bits change in each episode. So I can understand why a youngster would find this as absorbing as my grandson did.
The RRP on this is about £12.99 and I wouldn't pay that price for this as it's just a kiddy TV program that's been put on disc. But for the price we paid it was worth every penny. No it isn't interesting to us adults but it's one of those cute gimmicky things that little ones just get drawn to. It might not offer any educational value or even help a little one's speech development or anything but it's entertaining to them. There's plenty of time for learning when you read to your kids (or grandkids) and when you teach them their letters and numbers etc. Sometimes it's nice for kids to just take time out and laugh for the sake of laughing. This DVD is good for that and my grandson thoroughly enjoyed it.
