I saw 'Pink Flamingoes' at a film festival, late at night, with an audience who had obviously seen 'Hairspray' and little else. I think it was the scene in which Divine graffically goes down on her son that really made them realise that really, this wasn't a pastel-coloured fantasy. There are any number of deliberately disgusting sequences in 'Pink Flamingoes' as two sides vie to be termed the most disgusting people alive: artificial insemination with a turkey baster, the aforementioned incestuous / vaguely homosexual (because Divine was a man) sex, the now famous scene dog-mess meal and a man who can do things with his bottom that ... This is quite simply the most gross, disgusting, foul and yeukky film ever made - and it's absolutely great! I very much doubt that there is much created almost 30 years ago that still has the power to shock today - look how the Exorcist and even a Clockwork Orange are considered so much less heinous than they were in the their time. Pink Flamingos, although shocking in a completely different way, is still capable of having the same impact now that it did then. Forget Bad Taste, this John Waters classic really is the the absolute, total and utter pits - and it's completely hilarious - if that kind of thing does tickle your funny bone. ...
