Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (DVD)

Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (DVD) ... November, 2006 at Buena Vista Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL / Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know that Dead Man's Chest was filmed simultaneously with some of Pirates 3, so don't expect a complete resolution (think more The Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel a lot longer than it really is. Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he's still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgård appears as Will's undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards--and he's still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history. --Ellen A. Kim

Premium Review Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (DVD): Second of the Pirates of the Caribbean films (595 words)

Rating:

Dead Man's Chest is the second in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy and stars Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner, Keira Nightley as Elizabeth Swann and Bill Nighy as Davy Jones. The basic plot of the film is that Will Turner is asked to locate Jack Sparrow and retrieve Sparrow's compass, and if he does this he will be able to recover his freedom and that of his girl-friend, Elizabeth, who he intends to marry. If he refuses to recover the compass then the British will have him executed. Turner agrees to try to locate Sparrow, and we see Sparrow being treated as a God figure by a local tribe, but unfortunately for ...  Read the complete review

The original Pirates of the Caribbean was one of those movies that we all thought would be too corny and predictable to even consider a rent, let alone a purchase, yet, after rabid word-of-mouth that Johnny Depp was on top mischievous form, bringing the movie to life with his tour de force as charming rogue ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’, Johnny modeling him on the Rolling Stones septuagenarian guitarist Keith Richards. Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Mans Chest was one in three of all DVD sales on Amazon for the Christmas of 2006. Four years on from the original the franchise has managed to break ‘threequel’ box office records, even beating the Lord of the Rings ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (DVD): All At Sea (1285 words)

I've always had this mantra when it comes to movies that goes something like "Be wary of sequels; they are often the first movie re-hashed simply to make more money!" So why on Earth would I go and watch the first of two follows up to the hugely successful "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl"? ($653million gross including merchandise, no less). After all, producer Jerry Bruckheimer is renowned for his moneymaking prowess that tends to steer clear of anything too risky and usually involves an almost identical plot that folks will be totally comfortable with. This more often than not spells "ker-ching!" at the box office. ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Captain Jack didn't exactly shiver me timbers! (1504 words)

Arrrr me hearties, welcome aboard this review of Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, ye salty sea dogs. And stuff. This sea-quel (yo ho ho) to the 2003 surprise mega hit brings back the original main cast of Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, plus all the rest; it also brings in a new villain, Davy Jones (comes complete with his locker), played by Bill Nighy. It smashed the US record for most bounty hauled in on the opening weekend, netting over $130 million in 3 days, and it didn't do badly over this side of the high seas either, raking in £11 million in its opening weekend. It's also only the third film ever to gross more than $1 billion ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Pirates of the Caribbean - Dead Man's Chest (DVD): One Sparrow Does Not Make a Summer Blockbuster (1739 words)

Whenever a film becomes a huge commercial hit, there is always the temptation to make a sequel and, in many cases, turn the film into a trilogy. The latter films are always tougher ones because you’re trying to force new ideas into an already established framework and they don’t always fit quite as well as you might like. Cinema history is littered with the likes of “The Matrix: Reloaded” and “Ghostbusters 2” where the quality dipped after the first film. In defence of this idea, however, “X-Men 2” was pretty good. But would “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” turn out to be a triumph or a disaster? The second romp in what is to be a “Pirates of ...  Read the complete review
