Advantages: Great cast, great scenery
Disadvantages: Skeletons and some okay actin
I recently just watched this again and thought I'd do a review on it, hope you enjoy.
The Plot
When the girl of his dreams is taken by Pirates, Will Turner must work with a pirate called Jack Sparrow to find her. Together they have to find Elizabeth and her captor Barbossa, but Will finds that Jack wants more than just to help him, he wants revenge for Barbossa.
The Cast
Johnny Depp- Jack Sparrow
Jack played by the wonderful Johnny Depp is an icon in cinema today. He shouldn't have worked, Johnny Depp's idea of making him double as loopy as the writers wanted to be, and his portrayl of Sparrow being like one of the Rolling Stones, really shouldn't have worked, but I hate to say it. It did. From the first time you see him coming onto Port Royal, he almost takes you in. Especially women I have to say. Depp really excelled himself here, and I do think this is one of his greatest films to date. A brilliant actor.
Orlando Bloom- Will Turner
Do not call him Sissy, Do not call him Sissy. As you can probably tell I'm not this guys biggest fan, even going as far to 'decorate' my nan's calendar to make him look even sissier, wasn't too hard. Anyhow, he plays Will Turner, a boy in love with Elizabeth Swan and when she get's taken, he takes on the help of Jack Sparrow to find her, with disastrous outcomes. An okay actor (cringe), but I just think the casting directors made a mistake hiring someone who sounds like they have something up their cough half the time.
Kiera Knightly- Elizabeth Swann
Okay, in the first film, she really couldn't act. She tried bless her, but everything made me cringe, but she does get better as the films go on. Elizabeth is taken and the guy that has fallen in love with her Will, gets the help of a Pirate to save her.
My Opinion
First things foremost, when this film first came out, I was very young and really didn't want to watch this film. My family dragged me along and there I was sat in the cinema sulking away, because I had to watch some lame film about Pirates.
It didn't take too long until I was enthralled, the actors, the scenery everything just looked brilliant. The main thing that stood out for me back then, and considering I believe I would be around 11 at that point, I had never even heard of Johnny Depp before, let alone watch his films, he managed to play this dirty, insane pirate, which I think not only did I, but half of the world fell in love with.
I did however not like quite a lot of the film; however this doesn't stop me watching it over and over again. I have a great fear of skeletons and when they first came into the film, I was nearly sick, and that has stuck with me. I have managed to get past that though and I can watch it with closing my eyes at the discussing parts.
I love the reason why Johnny Depp did this film, this was the first film he has done in his career up until that point that his children could watch. Depp was just tremendous in this film and I don't think I would have enjoyed it so much without him. The casting directors made a perfect choice and a gamble if I may say so, because looking back over his old work, I really can't see how they thought, now that Johnny Depp will be best suited to play the loopy Jack Sparrow.
I should really mention Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom here, I don't want to, but I should. Knightly was actually the reason I went to watch the film, at that point in my life, she was the only one I knew, due to watching Bend It Like Beckham a few hundred times. After watching all 3 Pirate films her acting 'ability' still does make me cringe today as does Orlando Sissy Bloom. It was a shame they chose those two Englishmen to play that role, to all you American's out there, we don't all talk like we have a stick up our, you know where.
Amazingly despite my hate of skeletons, Knightly and Sissy Bloom, I still find myself watching this brilliant film over and over again. It was a gamble to make a film based on a Disney ride, but boy did it pay off. Johnny Depp despite being quite popular already, managed to boost his career and he has started in some magical and amazing films. The film has already produced two extra films, staring the same three main cast, and there is a fouth one in the works, which I will not be going to see, because the idiots have decided to hire someone out of and I can't believe I'm going to put this in my review, HSM which WILL not work. What I do think might work is their idea of hiring Russell Brand to play Sparrow's brother; I can really see that going ahead and working. Now lets all start a petition to get that fake guy outta HSM out of the film!
Should You Buy It?
I think you should be able to pick up a copy now for about £3, if you are one of the 1% that hasn't watched this yet, for many reasons, then get to watching it. Don't think it's a kid's film, I won't like it. Don't think cause it's got Pirates in it, it's stupid. It truly is one of the best films ever, and it really does make you laugh, and all you women out their will probably fall in love with either Sissy Bloom or Johnny Gorgeous Depp.
Hoped this helped.

Summary: A Brilliant film, which if you haven't seen already, watch it.
