Advantages: Johnny Depp
Disadvantages: None
I was brought the box set of the Pirates of the Caribbean films for my birthday a few months ago and have seen them all more than a few times since then...
In the beginning of The Curse of the Black Pearl, Governor Swann and his daughter Elizabeth are sailing to Port Royal when they rescue a little boy from a shipwreck, the boy is Will Turner. He has a gold pendant round his neck when he is rescued, and Elizabeth hides it because he will be accused of piracy otherwise.
Later on, we skip forward in time to Captain Norringtons promotion to commodor, when he proposes to Elizabeth. Elizabeth faints and falls into the water. Captain Jack Sparrow is attempting to comandeer a ship in port royal when he sees Elizabeth falling so he rescues her. He is almost arrested for piracy so he hides in a blacksmiths shop, the one that Will Turner works in. He is caught when he is knocked out and he is set to be tried for piracy. The crew of the Black Pearl appear in Port Royal to claim back the medallion that Elizabeth had that fell off her when she fell in the water. Elizabeth is caught and ensures she can stay safe with 'parlay' but she is kidnapped to break the curse that the crew are under.
This film continues to be one of my favourite films. Firstly, I mean, it's got Johnny Depp in it. Secondly, Johnny Depp dressed as a pirate. What else do you need for a film???
It's got really good one-liners (mostly coming from Johnny Depp!) which all work really well, none of them fall flat and it makes me fall about laughing everytime, even though I know it's coming...
The first time I watched it, I did get quite confused with the plot because it seemed quite in depth... but it all comes together eventually and makes it one of those you'll watch over and over and over and over again...
I definately thought Johnny Depp played the best character, particularly with the odd accent he has going on here, but next would be Orlando Bloom. I don't think I'd seen him in much before, but he is definately an actor I would consider watching in other types of stuff... I didn't think much of Keira Knightly to be honest, I just thought she seemed to be playing the character in a bit of a bland way... (blandly??)
It was released in 2003 and is certified as a 12, but I don't think it was particularly scary or have anything in that children any younger couldn't watch, although my little cousin did need the film explaining to her so maybe that's why!
Summary: Johnny Depp dressed as a pirate...
