Advantages: Ghost-Pirates
Disadvantages: CG effects look increasing dated
Before watching this Film I didn't know who Johnny Depp or any of the cast were with the exception of the elf from Lord of the Rings (Borelando Loom). This is the film that made them fully mainstream names. Now a lot of summer blockbusters are entertaining rubbish and this film based on a theme park ride (with Producer Jerry Bruckheimer dancing around it, throwing money and SPFX at it like some crazy voodoo man-witch) was set to look the same.
The story follows Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) as he tries to catch up with the unruly crew that stole his ship "The Black Pearl" and to re-capture it. He teams up with William Turner (Bloom) who has recently experienced the kidnapping of his beloved to the pirates of the black pearl. Little does Turner know the pirates are cursed with un-quenching emptiness and immortality.
I really see Pirates of the Caribbean as expensive camp-it-up panto with Johnny Depp as Widow Twanky and Bloom as the lead girl playing a character of the opposite sex. It's a family film with source material in a family based experience. Johnny Depp is let loose with little direction and creates a now (2 films later) iconic character who is a highly charismatic Keith Richards impersonation. This coupled with Geoffrey Rush's over the top performance as Depp's mutinous first mate, helps add to the movie's theatrical appeal.
Somewhere within us there is a yearning for high-sea adventure, and romantic pirate stereotypes...If the price is low and you haven't seen this film then I would defiantly buy it.
EXTRAS: Boasts 10 hours of extras, but I'd say only about an hour of watchable (unless you have kids).
Summary: Good dumb fun in the sun
