Introduction

The Pirates of the Caribbean movie series began in 2003 with the release of the first film The Curse of the Black pearl. It is a Disney movie and the name actually comes from a ride at Walt Disney theme parks. Pirates of the Caribbean is a sweeping action-adventure movie set in an era when villainous pirates scavenged the Caribbean seas. The film has led to two further releases with a fourth film expected to be released in 2011. The first film was a big success and mostly got positive reviews and was also nominated for five academy awards including one for Johnny Depp for best actor.

Plot

This film follows the quest of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), a rogue pirate and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), a blacksmith by trade. They are searching for Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley). Elizabeth is the daughter of the governor and the love of Will's life. She has been kidnapped by the feared Captain Barbossa. Together, they must battle a band of the world's most treacherous pirates who are led by the cursed Captain Barbossa, in order to save Elizabeth as well as recover the lost treasure that Jack seeks. They also seek to lift the curse of the Pirates of the Caribbean and their ship The Black pearl.

Opinion

This is a fantastic movie full of action, adventure and also humor. This is a movie to sit back and enjoy. It is funny, fast-paced and there are good performances from all of the cast.Johnny Depp is the real star of the movie and gives one of his best performances as the slightly camp Captain Jack Sparrow. He has plenty of witty and funny lines and his mannerisms and behaviour are very entertaining. Keira Knightley in one of her first big roles coming after Bend it like Beckham also does well and plays well against both Orlando Bloom as her love interest and Depp. Overall a very enjoyable pirate film. I think it is the best one of the series as is the case with most originals.
