Advantages: A pleasant suprise
Disadvantages: Quite a dark story
Plot: Cursed Pirates are plundering the Carbbean. Set to live forever in an undead state until they can break the curse. Having stole Captain Sparrow's ship, this film follows them attempting to recover the gold, with Sparrow trying toget his ship back. Will Turner tags along in order to find his father who was a member of the ghostly crew...
This film was an unexpected pleasure. The premise of a film based on a 'ride' initially had me thinking 'this is going to be terrible', however on watching it i was pleasantly suprised with the sound plot, excellent acting (mostly) and quality direction.
Starting with the acting, Johnny Depp is simply brilliant with his off the wall almost bizarre portrayal as Captain Sparrow. Alledgedly the mannerisms and movement were taken from Rolling Stone Keith Richards, and this makes it all the more amusing. Geoffrey Rush is suitable menacing as the evil undead Captain Barbossa, and delivers a real air of believability with his performance.
Unfortunately Bloom and Knightly show their limitations as actors, and when they;re on screen you'll find youself waiting for Depp to re-appear.
There is a real sence of authenticity with the locations and sets, with pirate ships painstakingly re-created so as to appear as real as possible, and this does not disappoint.
Suitable for both adults and children this is a fun adventure film, although some of the ghost scenes may frighten younger children, as the effects are very convincing. Adults will appreciate Depps dialogue more than children as it is laced with subtle innuendo and humour that children will miss and take as it is.
The plot is solid, if fairly dark. It won't be understood by younger kids, who'll just enjoy the ride (no pun intended), but adults shouldn't get bored too easily, and will appreciate the subtelties of it.
Overall a suprisingly good film, which will delight you regardless of your expectations.
Summary: An excellent fun adventure film
