Advantages: Johnny Depp, Johnny Depp and Johnny Depp!, Funny, Geniune pirate movie

Disadvantages: Quite long

I had wanted to see Pirates of the Caribbean ever since I heard they were making it. Being a fan of Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, I honestly thought this film was not one to be missed, and it turns out I was right. I went in with very low expectations as I?ve learnt to do, what?s the point of having high expectations? Nothing lives up to it. Anyway I figured I would be staring at Orlando and Johnny just because of their looks but oh no, I enjoyed this movie as much as I enjoyed watching Orlando sword fighting! Anyway we?ve had the comic book transformations, such as X-men, Spider-man and more recently The Hulk, but now Disney has taken it one step further by creating an entire big budget blockbuster on a theme park ride, which is situated in Disney Land. The ride is an extremely popular attraction, so why wouldn?t the movie be a success? It has a brilliant cast and a decent up and coming director. Having been on the ride I would personally class this movie homage to it rather than an adaptation but if you?ve been on the ride then you?ll see several references to it in the movie. My friend Melissa kept going on about how amazing this movie was, she even told me that I would want to see it over and over again, but warned me against seeing it illegally, which I wouldn?t anyway. See this movie needs that cinema experience to make it that much better, trust me it?ll be worth it to experience it in the cinema. You will appreciate this movie much more after seeing it on the big screen.

For a summer blockbuster this movie has done well with the critics. As well as brilliant reviews this movie got 5 stars from the movie bible that is Empire magazine. If this hasn?t convinced you to see this movie, then I truly don?t know what will. This movie has been a major success stateside raking in more than $200 million in just four weeks, and it even looks set to make more money than this years most anticipated movie ?The Matrix Reloaded?.

The main
storyline is that a young boy named Will Turner is rescued after being found floating on a plank of wood in the middle of the ocean. He seems to have survived a ship that was attacked by pirates which is left in pieces. On the boat that saved him is a young girl named Elizabeth Swann, who notices a medallion around his neck. After closer inspection Elizabeth realises Will is a pirate, before anyone can see it, she hides it away. Years later Elizabeth is kidnapped by a pirate named Barbossa who wants that medallion back. Will wanting to rescue her, joins forces with a pirate named Captain Jack Sparrow in order to save the love of his life. Sparrow isn?t going to do this for nothing though; he wants his ship back, the black pearl which was taken over by Barbossa. Will is unaware that the boat, on which Elizabeth is trapped, is occupied by pirates who are cursed. When the moonlight hits them, they are turned into invincible skeletal creatures. They want to lift this curse and the only way to end it is with the medallion Elizabeth has. The odd pair clash at first but realise the only way to get what they want is to join forces.

The script for this movie is sharp. There is a lot of quick wit in this movie and it also provides a lot of funny one-liners. This movie does not have a complicated plot; it is a pirate movie at the end of the day. Even though it does have a 12A certificate it still is easy to understand but there are some parts of the movie if you miss you might get slightly confused, but other than that it?s easy to understand. I myself thought the plot was top notch, simply because it kept true to movies about pirates, with all the traditional things there, but not only that this movie was funny, and the plot was decent unlike certain pirate movies out in the last ten years. These swashbuckling pirate movies always have a certain formula to follow. You know, the funny pirate, the hero, the damsel in distress, the treasure, the plank walking and the
very tight corsets. And thankfully it?s all here. This is a genuine pirate movie, which is enjoyable to watch from start to finish. The movie is done in typical pirate movie fashion; there isn?t anything original here but it?s still enjoyable to watch.

My little cousins were instantly drawn to this movie due to the swashbuckling idea and the pure fun that is the trailer, but were a little disheartened when it was revealed this movie had a 12A certificate. Now of course they can still go to see it with an adult, but what seems most surprising is that Disney movies are almost never above a PG certificate. This however impressed me, a movie about pirates which wont have to contain itself to stay within the PG barrier, and I am glad they didn?t hold back and release a simple movie with no decent action scenes. The jokes will just go right past the younger viewers heads which in my opinion is great, as there is something for everybody, the comedy is much better than expected as it isn?t created especially for little children.

One thing that is so impressive about this movie is the comedy. It has a lighthearted tone and most of the comedy comes from Johnny Depp. Also adding more comedy to the movie is the physical comedy. In my opinion some of the funniest moments were in physical comedy form, this just added a much funnier touch to the movie. This is what makes this movie so enjoyable, the fact that you can laugh all the way through as Captain Jack Sparrow?s funny mannerisms. Many people might feel that the movie is sugary sweet due to the connection with Disney but personally I felt that some of the comedy is not done in the usual Disney style, which is one thing I appreciated about the movie.

Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley were there to create the romantic side of the story, and luckily the two looked brilliant together. These two British actors are headed for bigger things in Hollywood. I thought they acted very well together, and thought
there on screen chemistry was impressive. One of the greatest partnerships in this movie however came from Bloom and Depp. The two worked brilliantly together, and definitely had some of the best gags on screen. I hope they do make more films together as they certainly do work well together.

Johnny Depp simply stole the show; it?s as simple as that, all the other actors did well to fill their roles but Depp simply shone as captain Jack Sparrow. Apparently Depp sought inspiration from none other than Keith Richards from the Rolling stones. Even though Keith isn?t a pirate (who knows, he might be) Johnny Depp did seem to borrow a lot of his mannerisms, which shockingly worked extremely well. You can probably imagine the eyeliner, the drunken walk, right down to the brilliant accent. He played the role brilliantly as he was funny, charismatic and had such a style of acting that you couldn?t help but love the guy. One thing that you can?t help but notice is his facial expressions, his whole performance was just amazing, and the expressions he made added a funny element to the movie. Depp?s whole attitude was superbly acted right down the gold-toothed smile and drunken walk. He played Captain Jack Sparrow as a bit of a goofy, loony drunk. Everyone I?ve spoken to who has seen this movie does not have one bad word to say about him. I personally believe this movie would not have been what it was without Depp, he made this movie his, and he definitely had the stand out performance. This movie is a must for all Johnny Depp fans.

Geoffrey Rush is a great actor and he does not disappoint in this movie as the evil cursed pirate Barbossa. He incorporated all the things into Barbossa that a bad guy should have. His performance was definitely brilliant. I was especially impressed with his accent; he did everything right in my opinion.

Now ladies man Orlando Bloom was probably the reason young teenage girls (and myself, can you blame me ladies?) flocked
to see this movie, but considering he?s a heartthrob, his performance was still great. I thought he was plain adorable in this movie. He is such an incredible actor and played his part brilliantly. I?m glad he can play less serious roles, but he suits everything. I just thought he was great in this movie as well as gorgeous!

Keira Knightley is making a name for herself in Hollywood and thanks to this movie she?s on her way. Her performance was definitely better than I had expected as leading ladies in these types of movies are usually just there to play the damsel in distress but I think she gave a great performance as Elizabeth Swann. She also made the right expressions at the right times, I truly believe Keira Knightley is a good actress, and she has proven she can act. Knightley possesses a certain charm, which is highlighted in this film, she is probably best described as a modern day English rose.

The casting in my opinion was superb, and it was great to see some British talent too, in the form of Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jack Davenport, Jonathon Pryce and even Mackenzie Crook from ?The office?. I was also relieved a British actress was cast as Elizabeth Swann, and thankfully someone who can act rather than getting a popular American teen starlet. The best casting choice was by far Johnny Depp; he made this movie what it was.

The CGI effects in this movie were brilliant. The most impressive scenes were when the cursed pirates appear to be half man and half skeleton, it?s all done so well and looks impressive. At one point I did expect the skeleton effects to look somewhat animated and to some extent yes they did, but that doesn?t mean they didn?t look good, it all looked amazing, definitely what I imagined cursed pirates to look like. The transformation from man to skeleton was definitely a highlight of the superb effects. It was done so cleverly and the way it changed just looked great. Also the costume design and make up was
impressive. Everything was brilliant right down to Captain Jack Sparrow?s eyeliner. This movie has some stunning action sequences. The sword fighting is beyond impressive, and not once do any of the fight scenes lose any of their appeal. Thankfully the sword fighting is kept exciting, and pleasing to watch. And one thing the audience can appreciate is that the fight scenes don?t over run, and get dull, they end when the need to. In pirate movies you can almost always expect sword fighting and this movie is no different but the style in which the fighting is done is mind blowing, after you?ve seen the movie it will become apparent to you that they didn?t hold back when it came to the extremely big budget of this movie, as everything is done right.

?Pirates of the Caribbean? is Gore Verbinski?s follow up to last years hit ?The Ring?. Verbinski is a bit of a newcomer when it comes to big blockbusters, although he has directed such movies as ?The Mexican? and ?Mouse hunt?. His last big hit was ?The Ring? and I certainly loved his direction in that movie as much as I did with this movie. In my opinion Verbinski is an extremely versatile director as he chooses to direct very different movies rather than sticking to the same formula directing such moves as ?Mouse hunt? and ?The Ring? but has proven he is a smart director, as he knows how to please the crowds. Verbinski keeps everything sailing smoothly without the movie losing any of its appeal, the direction is brilliant and he has made one amazing movie here. He has cleverly incorporated all of the elements connected with pirate movies but without ever over using them. I can only praise his direction, as this movie never had a dull moment.

The only complaint about the movie I have is that it?s slightly long; I personally had no problem with the length but would understand if some people would begin to lose interest. I did feel that there were some unnecessary scenes, which could have been cut out to re
duce the length. If you don?t like sitting in cinemas for too long then I recommend you wait for this to be released on video.

This movie isn?t just for the kids. Anyone can enjoy it. You don?t have to like pirate?s, you don?t have to like Disney and you don?t even have to like any of the cast, but trust me you?ll enjoy it anyway and by the time you leave you?ll be a fan of Johnny Depp if you weren?t already. There?s enough romance, comedy and action to keep you glued to the screen right till the very end. Trust me this movie is a ton of fun, my advice to you is go see it!

You've just explained it all to me! Johnny Depp=Keith Richards! Of course ;-) He was camping it up and I tried to think who he reminded me of. We loved the film but when I asked my daughter if her boys (My grandsons) would like the DVD for Christmas she said no because skeletons scare them and they are 6 and 8 years old.

I thought she was being too protective but now I have read your review I know she was right. Good gidance and thanks.

Lamorna in a 'thought it was such great fun and didn't know it wasn't a grown up film till half way through' kinda way
