Vin Diesel a muscle-bound mass murderer who has recently escaped from a maximum-security facility. A sound interesting doesn’t it? Well then you have only scratched the surface of writer/director David Twohy’s sci-fi thriller “Pitch Black”. This movie begins with a vessel hurtling through space, with a strange assortment of people on board, They are all unconscious in cryo-sleep all except Riddick (Vin diesel) a dangerously unstable convict. Who is being transported to prison by Officer William Johns (Cole Hauser). The craft is hit by a storm and lands in the desert planet. Once they have gathered their bearings, they soon realize that Riddick has escaped. At this point in the movie we are introduced to the rest of the cast as they search the desert for the escaped convict, and at one point they come across a desolate village, housing an air craft, that needs a little elbow grease to get going, but it could lead to there freedom. The one big question in everyone’s mind is “where have all the people gone”? We soon learn that there are aliens, as one of the team is eaten by these creatures that apparently thrive in the darkness. So they will be safe as long as they stay in the daylight. Considering this planet has three suns they should not have a problem, or so we think. Johns recaptures Riddick by using is unique weakness against him, Riddick has had his eyes surgically altered to allow him killer night vision, this is a weapon that comes in very handy when it is Pitch Black, The only downfall is it makes him virtually blind in the daylight. So on this desert with three suns he is like a fish out of water. The team suddenly discovers that an even greater problem is about to arise, a massive eclipse is coming, that will block out all three of this planets suns, so it will be left in total darkness. Paving the way for thousands of bloodthirsty aliens to come out and play. S
o the team has to band together to survive. In my opinion, I found this film to be very entertaining and very original in its plot structure, however I did not feel this would rate well as a “scary movie”. Riddick was by far the most interesting, if anything he is a likeable character, and silver eyed. Vin Diesel (Saving private ryan, The boiler room) helped to give this convict a unique and menacing appeal. I thoroughly enjoyed Vin Diesels performance, none of the other supporting roles could not match his stage characters performance, and my biggest gripe about this overall story line, was the conclusion of “Pitch Black” could have been better, although it was not a completely unsatisfying ending, It wasn’t what I had hoped for. Overall this was a good movie, but like any other it did have it’s down points, and it’s high points. I would defiantly recommend this film, although I feel some people won’t like it. THE CAST. Vin Diesel – Richard Riddick. Cole Hauser – William Johns. Radha Mitchell – Caroline Fry. Claudia Black – Shazza. Keith David – Imam. DIRECTOR. David N Twohy. Thank you for reading, Bubbles.:O)
