Advantages: Great film
Disadvantages: too much swearing.
When war broke out in Viet nam in the 60's, everyone, including the Americans never expected it to escalate and continue for nearly 10 years. It was a war with no winners. Only losers. Mainly the Americans. It also divided a nation both on and off the battle field. This film tells the story of corruption and the division of men in a platoon of American soldiers. The film is seen through the eyes of a rookie soldier who decided to join up and writes letters home telling family about the events of war. Within his platoon are 2 fueding sergeants played by William Dafoe and a scar faced Tom Berenger who allegedly cannot die, and their mens division within the ranks. The plot deepens as the conflict between the 2 men results in a brawl and later leads to Dafoe being left behind in an enemy zone after Berenger claims he has seen Dafoes body in the bushes dead. This is until Charlie Sheen (the rookie soldier) sees Dafoe after this, running away and being shot by the persuing Viet Kong. I wont tell you then end ing but you must watch it. A great film by a great director, Oliver Stone. The Sound track is one of the finest pieces of classical music ever written. The incidental music throughout is in keeping wit the rest of the film period by selecting chart songs of its day such as Tracks of my tears by Smokey Robinson. One thing I will say is, this was one of the first major films to use gratuitous swearing every other word. F this and F that! so be prepared to ignore the profanity. Also there are scenes that depict brutality and violence depicted in the film, particualrly the rape and murder of a young Vietnamese girl by the American Soldiers. Again, if this is likely to offend you, do not watch it.
