Where Minghalla's film conciously contrasts an austere and America with a vibrant and colourful Europe, all of Plein Soleil's colour canvas is vibrant, almost glowing. First, a little translation. The title "Plein Soleil" is translated on the subtitle track as "Purple Noon", which has never made any sense to me. Much closer to the meaning of the expression might be "exposed in blazing sunlight" or, quite literally, "Full Sun". The film is the first of several attempts to bring Patricia Highsmith's chameleon psychopath, Tom Ripley, to life, and the plot of "Plein Soleil"is almost identical to the later film "The Talented Mr Ripley" starring the appropriately blank Matt Damon, and directed By the late Anthony Minghella.
