When shown on BBC2 over the Christmas period, this was billed as a classic piece of film noir, a violent thriller that blazed a trail on the silver screen long before Tarantino managed to turn gangsters and guns into a licence to print money. The plot looked simple enough – Lee Marvin is in the role of plays Walker, a Los Angeles hood who was double-crossed by his erstwhile partner in crime, Mal Reese (played by John Vernon), but survives the murder attempt on Alcatraz and makes it back to the mainland to seek out Reese and get his money back. This film has the reputation of being a classic from 1967 as a thriller, full of violence. Unfortunately I do not feel that it has stood the test of time very well and now seems a very slow mundane film. Lee Marvin does his best as the betrayed thief who now seeks revenge on the man that stole $93,000 from him and left him for dead. Mal Reese (played by John Vernon) is the man that was Walker’s (Lee Marvin) partner, but in a scene set in the disused Alcatraz prison, Reese shoots Walker at Point Blank range and takes off with the money and Walker’s wife.
