Point Break (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 30 June, 2003 at Pathe Distribution / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Efficiently directed by Kathryn Bigelow and featuring some diverting action scenes, 1991's Point Break can be credited with anticipating the extreme-sports fad. A rash of daring bank robberies erupt in which the bad guys all wear the masks of worse guys-former presidents. Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves), an impossibly named former football star who blew out his knee and became a crime-busting federal agent instead, figures out that none of the heists occur during surfing season and all of them occur when, so to speak, surf's down. So obviously, he reasons, we're dealing with some surfer-dude bank robbers. He goes undercover with just such a group, led by a very spiritual guru-type Patrick Swayze, who has some muddled philosophies when it comes to materialism. Reeves' intelligent-sounding lines don't make him seem remotely intelligent, but the plot makes him look positively brilliant. --David Kronke

... robbers. In terms of plot, the film is a little cliched and predictable, yet generally decent enough. There's nothing wrong with it per-se, but there's nothing great or standout about it. It's your average crime thriller in a lot of ways, although the surfing addds a nice backdrop visually. The acting is the best thing about this film. Keanu Reeves (and quite a young one at that) does a great job as the FBI agent. I love his intensity, and he puts it to full force here. Likewise, Patrick Swayze is the perfect surfer ro...more

Premium Review Point Break (DVD): Come Along For The Ride (858 words)

After recently reviewing Hot Fuzz where they are numerous references to Point Break, I decided that it was time to watch the film again, more to refresh my memory for this review rather than to decide whether or not I like it. I was shocked to see that it was actually released 17 years ago in 1991. The film opens with shots of a policeman in a firing range and a surfer out at sea, so the expectation is set that there will be a link between the two. The comically named Johnny Utah, played by Keanu Reeves, is a 25 year old ex footballer who has been recently inducted into the FBI and moves to Los Angeles to start his new job. As with most films of this type, ...  Read the complete review

Their first assignment is a to investigate a series of bank robberies. After collecting a few clues from the various robberies they get a lead that the robbers might be surfers. So they arrange for Utah to go undercover and integrate himself into the local surfing community and try and find the gang carrying out these robberies. Premium Review Point Break (DVD): "Too Much Testosterone In Here" (750 words)

Sometimes you come across a movie which you really do not expect to like and yet which turns out to be superb. At the time of watching I really wasn't a big fan of Patrick Swayze, although I did enjoy Ghost, and really didn't rate Keanu Reeves much as an actor - although I still don't think he can carry a sentence longer than a couple of words. Couple this with the fact that the movie revolves around surfing which is a pasttime I really can't understand and which seems to be populated by over-macho posers, at least as far as movieland goes and things really don't look too good. Fortunately I was proved completely wrong. Yes Point Break does ...  Read the complete review

(Title explanation….. point ~ sharp…… break ~ snap …… dooyoo title ~ short and snappy ….. hence ….. Sharp and Snappy! …… oh whatever………!!) Oh god, the memories that go with this movie!! The first time I saw this movie, the wrinklies were out of town for the week, I was on holiday from work (in the days when I had a job!!) and I did nothing but watch TV, order in, and 'veg' out!!! Ohh I had fun!! I first rented the video but soon had a copy of my very own in my grubby little mitts, a copy that has been watched many times, and has been as enjoyable as it was the first time I ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Point Break (DVD): Good Swayze action film (210 words)
by - written on 18/11/00 (Very useful, 13 readings)
Rating:

This film sees Keanu Reeves as an undercover cop tracking down a group of bank robbers. The robbers actually are a group of surfers whose leader is Swayze. Reeves is forced to joining up with them, and is slowly converted to the lifestyle that they lead. What does he do? Catch the baddies or enjoy the life.... This is actually quite a cool film and shows some artistic style in the production. The film isn't a traditional action movie, providing lots of surfing action with some great night time shots. The action when it happens is controlled and not too over the top, which actually stops it being a blockbuster movie. The film marked a break for ...  Read the complete review
