Police Academy is a comedy film from 1984. It tells the story of a group of bizarre misfits who enter police training at the academy, and the misadventures they get into whilst there. Well this is a wonderful film. The plot is so funny, mainly because of the range of bizarre characters it holds. The majority of the story is about Mahoney wanting to succeed, and Sgt Harris doing everything to get him out. It's a battle of wills, and the comedy that ensues is just hilarious. The acting in this film is average. Let's face it, it doesn't require much from the actors involved, as it is basically a light-hearted film that centers on a silly plot. Having ... This film is one which I must have seen over 20 times but this was the first time I actually sat down and watched the whole thing. The year is now and the police force have changed their rules so anyone regardless of age, height, weight, sex and colour can sign up for police training so you can imagine the people who turn up at the police academy! Mahoney is a young man who is working in a car park when he gets annoyed and parks a car on 2 wheels and ends up getting arrested again. When he is waiting in the police station he meets Jones who is also there and can make excellent sound effects with his voice. Mahoney is told by the police boss that ... Read the complete review

Police Academy is one of those movies you feel extremely guilty about. Why? Well it's stupid, corny and at times even ridiculously phony. Yet the film seems to have gathered a type of cult following and you can see that by noticing that there were six sequels made to this film. How do I know? Well as a kid this was my favorite film and I went to every film religiously. Now I'm all grown up and I can't watch most of the series anymore without groaning. This first film though and the two after it are the exceptions to the rules. Are they all corny? Of course. That doesn't stop me from liking them though. The plot is simple: The mayor has decided that in this day and age ... Read the complete review

Can anyone tell me why this film is popular? Further to that not only why it was popular but why were there are least 4 sequels even allowing for that fact that even Steve Guttenberg got out before the end. There are many similar films in American film history where a number of films have been made which follow the same pattern. The National Lampoon ones and the Airplane series spring to mind. British cinema I suppose also had the Carry On films but they were subtle art house films compared with the tripe that is Police Academy. The film is set around the premise that a City police department takes on a bunch of recruits who are inept, useless and stupid. With ... Read the complete review

I suppose there isn't one single person reading this who hasn't seen or heard of this movie, or the numerous sequels, television series/cartoon spin-offs and merchandise...etc. etc. which resulted from its massive success... Strange then, how at the time of writing this category, and that for the ever growing number of sequels remains devoid of submissions. Maybe because we all got sick to death of them rerunning the movie on terrestrial television until it became more of a horror movie than a comedy, sending us all running screaming for the remote when we heard the few tell-tale notes of a soundtrack which became burned into our minds forever?
