Pretty in Pink (DVD) ... DVD released 20 August, 2002 at Paramount / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Closed-captioned, Colour, Dolby, DVD-Video, Subtitled, Widescreen, NTSC / The era of Molly Ringwald's profitable collaboration with writer-producer-director John Hughes (Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club) was at its peak with this 1986 film (directed by Howard Deutch but in every sense part of the developing Hughes empire). Ringwald plays a high-school girl on the budget side of the tracks, living with her warm and loving father (Harry Dean Stanton) and usually accompanied by her insecure best friend (Jon Cryer). When a wealthy but well-meaning boy (Andrew McCarthy) asks her out, her perspective is overturned and Cryer's character is threatened. As was the case in the mid-'80s, Hughes (who wrote the script and produced the film) brought his special feel for the cross-currents of adolescent life to this story. In its very commercial way, it is an honest, entertaining piece about growing pains. The attractive supporting cast (many of whom are much better known now) does a terrific job, and Ringwald and Cryer have excellent chemistry. --Tom Keogh

... original story but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Hughes was king of the teen movie, and the stories are always predictable yet spot on. I would have been a bit miffed if I hadn't got the obvious ending from Pretty in Pink. Pretty in Pink is obviously 80s - the clothes, the music, the dancing, the attitudes of the kids. But that's not a bad thing. And although it can obviously be placed at a specific point in time, it doesn't look dated as such. It looks 80s yes, but not dated. It is a product of its time. ...more

Premium Review Pretty in Pink (DVD): Dreaming of Andrew McCarthy (743 words)

***FILM ONLY REVIEW*** Following the sad death of writer/producer/director John Hughes, whose films defined the 1980s, I found myself seeking out his movies, old favourites to watch again and some I hadn't seen before. Pretty in Pink was released in 1986, and was written and produced by Hughes. I had actually never seen this film before, but I settled down happily to watch it, secure in the knowledge that I would be getting the usual teen drama and romance with a great 80s soundtrack. Pretty in Pink is about Andie (Molly Ringwald), a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who attends school in a rich part of town. Her and her other "poor" ...  Read the complete review

What can i say i really want to do this film justice so this review is more than likely going to be very long. MOLLY RINGWALD Plays Andy Walsh a very intelligent girl she plays the role so well that you couldn't imagine someone else being Andy you could refer to her as a awkward rebel, if you have seen not another teen movie you will know exactly what i am referring too. She doesn't want to fit in and does just about everything to make sure she doesn't shes poor in comparison to those who bully her in the film. Benny a girl and a few others similar to her in the film who bully Andy are all well off and quite rich whereas Andy isn't. ...  Read the complete review

Released in 1986, Pretty in Pink is an 80s classic which was directed by John Hughs who also directed films like The Breakfast Club. Aswell as being an amazing, cult movie, Pretty in Pink also boast a great cast and awesome soundtrack. Molly Ringwald plays Andie, a high school student whose school is divided into the poor kinds, and the rich ones. Andie is one of the poor kids, and lives with just her dad since her mum recently left them. She works in a record store after school to earn some extra money and makes a lot of her own clothes out of things she buys second hand. Andie and her best friend Duckie do there best to get though the school day without ...  Read the complete review

Having gone over to my friend's house on Friday for a girly night to watch cheesy films and drink slightly too much wine, my friend and I decided to watch the 80s movie Pretty in Pink. The film is set in an American high school (always a good start), and focuses on main character Andie (Molly Ringwald), as she goes through various issues with her family and friends in the run up to her high school prom. We first see Andie getting ready for school and trying to get her dad to get up out of bed to look for a job. This role reversal adds an interesting element to the film, as we see that Andie and her dad have different ways of dealing with problems, and this ...  Read the complete review

I have to admit I’ve always had a bit of a thing for the films of John Hughes - The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Sixteen Candles - I love them all (well I’ll give Home Alone a miss I think). I was about to describe them as pure 80s nostalgia, but when I was watching them it was the 80s and they just provided a few hours of fine entertainment. So why the sudden desire to revisit favourite films from my teens? Well I shall explain…. I was stuck at home ill the other week because I’d just had a minor operation so couldn’t move around much or go to work (very unfortunate!). And my boyfriend, being the lovely guy ...  Read the complete review
