If I were to make a list of my all-time favourite chick flicks that I've watched over and over, then I think Pretty Woman would be on it !! We begin by learning a few things about the main male character Edward Lewis ( played by Richard Gere ) and those things mainly involve being a work-aholic, never falling in love and being rather selfish in his relationships with former girlfriends. However, that all changes when he meets Vivian ( played by Julia Roberts ). She's a young woman who has fallen on hard times and according to her flatmate and friend Kit, is not your typical prostitute material. Edward stops for directions one evening and picks up Vivian to help him reach his destination. Once there however, he eventually invites her up to his suite and their encounter that night ends with a business proposal of Vivian being at the beck-and-call of Edward for the week whilst he's there on business, as a companion for any business meals etc. During this time, Vivian is able to 'reform' Edward's work-aholic attitude and attitude to the women in his life in general although Vivian wants and the white knight and Edward admits that he cannot give to this. However, it is once Vivian has left and she's organising herself a new life away from that of a prostitute, that Edwards realises he wants Vivian and is able to be her white knight should she want it.

There's a few nice touches in the film i.e the relationship between Vivian and the hotel manager Barney, who at first is hoping to be rid of Vivian and 'her sort' as soon as possible from his hotel. Their friendship develops however and Barney plays a part in the reunion of Edward and Vivian in the end. Vivian's friendship with Kit is also a sweet one since Kit is well aware that Vivian being as bright as she is could be so much more and pushes Vivian into fulfiiling her plans to finish her education. Thus whilst Vivian's friendships go from strength to strength, the friendship between Edward and his lawyer Phillip deteriorates when Phillip oversteps the mark where Vivian is concerned and the friendship between Edward and Phillip, based on mutual work and money ethics, is uncovered for the shallow friendship that it always was and Phillip no longer has a part in play in the changes Edward brings to his business dealings.

I guess it's the modern version of Cinderella i.e a girl with very little falling in love with the prince ( albeit complicated and emotionally stunted prince !! ) and would recommend it for teenagers and upwards ( the official rating is a 15 for obvious sexual references and scenes. ) All in all, the film offers romance and humour and isn't at all tacky, probably because you will agree with Kit with regards to Vivian being like a 'duck of out water' in their world on the streets.

Summary: It may have your average boy meets girl story line, but it's not your average boy meets girl film.

I enjoyed reading your review, but must say I disagree totally, I hate this film.

It is outdated, sexist, and just a second rate version of Pygmalion. I never saw the romance in it at all!

I think you come close to giving away too much about the plot - remember, some peope won't have seen this yet.
