I first caught a glimpse of this when my older sister got it on vhs video when it was released in 1990. I came in the room, aged 10, and she quickly put it off, but I quickly seen a glimpse of a woman on a piano, and a man lifting up her dress. "What's he doing?" I asked. "giving her a cuddle", said my sister. "Ok" I said - she was lying! I've now watched the dvd over and over again, and it is 1 of my favourite films.

So what is it about?

The film is mostly about 2 characters. Vivian, played by Julia Roberts, and Edward, played by Richard Gere. Vivian is a prostitute, and we see her touting for business on Hollywood boulevard. Edward, who's a rich and powerful business man drives up in his flash car. He stops on the Boulevard, not for any extra services, just that he can hardly drive the car and he is also lost. He sees Vivian and asks for directions. Vivian is more than happy to help -for a price. After all she doesn't come for free. He offers $10, she says for $20, she'll tell where the stars live. She acompanies him along in the car to show him to his hotel room and ges her money. She then waits for the bus outside the hotel, and when Edwards asks why not a Taxi, she says she will ride the bus with her 20 bucks. He realises he quite likes her, and invites her up to his hotel room, perhaps not for any bedroom fun, but he is in a strange city all alone. She negotiates a price and goes in with him. The image isn't great - him in a suit and with a briefcase, her with thigh high boots, cropped top and barely there skirt. They get more than 1 odd glance on their way through the posh hotel.

Edward realises that he is falling for her,and asks her to spend the week, she says he can't afford her, but he gives her $3,000 for the week, and money to go shopping. Vivian thinks she's landed on her feet and can't believe her luck. She reports her good luck to her friend Kit, a fellow prostitute and lives the week up in the posh penthouse with designer clothes, and fancy meals out.

The storyline isn't as smutty as you think it would be. It was a 15 certificate film, and there is only the 1 sex scene in it, and you don't really see anything anyway. The story is a romantic kind of fairytale, and we find how Edward has all this money, but is sad and lonely, and although Vivian lives for the moment, she is still a good girl at heart, and doesn't seem to enjoy her life and how it is heading. Not going to spoil anymore of this film, and i'm sure most of us have seen it. I would say this is more of a Chick flick, and my husband hates this as he says it is rubbish, but each to their own.

The soundtrack is quite good, apart from the title song, as I just don't like Roy Orbison.

Just a reallly good film in my opinion and 1 of my top 5 all time films.
