Advantages: ROMANTIC, great on-screen chemistry!
Disadvantages: None!
This contemporary version of Cinderella has dazzled and captured the hearts of male and female audiences alike. This is a tale about two different, yet somewhat two people who couldn't be more alike in different circumstances and surroundings. One of the most famous quotes in the movie; "You and I are both such similar people- we both screw people for money", certainly does justice to the whole idea and essence of the story.
It is basically a story about a prostitute and a very rich man. They who meet by chance and ends up living together for what Richard Gere (as Edward) calls a "business deal". What I just adored about the movie is the obvious on-screen chemistry between Vivian (played by Julia Roberts) and Edward. Their contradictory lifestyles- being both alike and different at the same time- makes them one of the most endearing on-screen couple. While Edward is quiet, reserved, hates heights and is a typical man of few words, Vivian is witty, talkative and is very fond of heights. The movie is sweet and simple; it merely shows how the two of them fit well together and complement each other.
But despite the limited plot story with very few dramatic happenings, it will maintain its legendary status. The acting is terrific; Julia Roberts and Richard Gere remain so natural on screen. In fact, in the DVD Extras, it is explained how certain scenes were off-script and were completely spontaneous and invented by the actors themselves. These sorts of elements did contribute into giving a more natural aspect to the scenes. Like any good movie, one cannot decipher the acting in between the exchange of dialogues. Everything seems to be flowing as naturally as possible.
Speaking of dialogues, the scriptwriter took a great risk with certain lines which might have been considered as too "cheesy" or "overly-romantic for many. But it is all done in such a tactful and appropriate manner that it just seems to fit well with the plot. In fact, there is nothing but romance with a little bit of drama mixed in Pretty Woman. If you are looking for something with a little more action, suspense, or even high dramatic elements, then this is totally the wrong movie for you. The movie just remains centered on a budding relationship between a prostitute and a rich businessman and the only dose of light suspense for the audience remains in whether they will end up together or not.
The only "dark" element about the movie would be the theme of prostitution, and the dangers of being trapped in such a circle. However, the movie just lightly touches this theme without elaborating too much on it. Julia Roberts also represents a girl who ended up on the street because she had no other choice- and this is one element which contributes into given a somehow deeper aspect to the movie.
Overall, I would say that it is a nice romantic comedy with some wonderful dialogue and great acting! On-screen chemistry is certainly present!
Thanks for reading!
