Advantages: Great story, one of the best romantic comedies!
Disadvantages: None!
Just to note that this is a review of the film not the DVD. Thanks.
The film begins with Vivian Ward (Julia Roberts) working as a prostitute on Hollywood Boulevard, Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) is escaping a party. As he can't reach his car with it being blocked in, he decides to take his lawyer's Lotus instead. He soon gets lost and having difficulty with the car stops on Hollywood Boulevard to try and figure out how to drive it. This attracts the attention of Vivian and her friend Kit, Vivian walks over and offers to give directions, for a fee. She ends up getting in the car and Edward lets her drive it to his hotel as he can't drive it properly.
Once they arrive at the hotel he pays her for the directions, Edward sees her waiting at the bus stop and walks over to her. He ends up asking her to come back to the hotel with him for the night.
The next morning Edward is on the telephone with his lawyer Philip Stuckey, they are completing a takeover of a failing business. Stuckey suggests to Edward that he takes a date to the meeting that is arranged for that night. Edward whilst looking at Vivian says he has someone in mind. Edward then offers Vivian $3000 to spend the week with him. She readily agrees although bartering a bit before finally accepting.
Edward informs Vivian she will need an evening dress for the meeting that they will be attending that night, so he gives her some cash. There is the famous scene where she is turned away from a shop on Rodeo Drive as she is wearing unsuitable clothing.
As the week progresses Vivian and Edward grow closer learning more and more about each other along the way, this helps them in turn to become better people. The question is will they end up together in the end despite their very different backgrounds. I am sure you can guess what happens.
Pretty Woman is a romantic comedy which has the feel of a fairy tale to it with the character of Vivian escaping her current life. I do have to say the ending is quite predictable but not in a bad way, like most romantic films you can see the ending coming a mile away. This film however flows really well and with the two leads working so good together it's the story along the way that counts.
The film has some funny moments especially with a store manager desperately trying to suck up to the two leads to make them spend more money in his store. It is fairly lighthearted despite what Vivian does for a living.
It was released in 1990 so is actually quite an old film now but it will continue to be a movie that I could watch over and over again. The ending without a doubt always leaves me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. The soundtrack to Pretty Woman is also great and adds perfectly to the movie, I especially like "It Must Have Been Love" by Roxette. Along with the song by Roy Orbison which inspired the title of the film.
All in all a great feel good movie that doesn't disappoint, if you haven't seen it, where have you been?
Summary: Definitely a five star rating from me for Pretty Woman
