Advantages: If you don't like this sort of film ?
Disadvantages: None really
Pretty Woman was one of those films that everyone but me seemed to have seen, my mum always went on about how it was one of the best films ever and such a great chick flick. As I'm a really big chick flick fan I decided it was about time to watch it the other night when it was showing on ITV2 and I didn't regret it!
Its not the most usual theme for a comedy as it centres around prostitution in amongst the life of the rich and famous in Hollywood. Julia Roberts plays Vivian Ward, a prostituted working the streets of Hollywood. Its just an average night when Edward Lewis (played by Richard Gere) is looking for his hotel in a borrowed car, while driving down Hollywood Boulevard he stops to ask Vivian for directions, and ends up taking her back to his hotel. Needing an escort to his works functions over the week, he offers her $3,000 to stay with him for a week and she accepts. The rest of the film shows their relationship and how they change each other. Will they ever be more than business partners?
originally it was intended to be a dark drama, with a totally different ending and I'm really glad that they changed this!
It was the two leads Julia Roberts and Richard Gere that really made this film in my opinion, the chemistry between them was so genuine and apparently there was quite a few improvised scenes. Indeed people thought Julia Roberts' performance was so good that she gained an Oscar for it. There was many people considered for both roles before Gere and Roberts were finally chosen but I really cant see anyone else in those roles.
With it being a chick flick type film it could fit into many different categories, there are some funny moments and good quotes but as well there is the more drama side with serious things happening and some touching moments.
Its one of the most successful films, certainly one of the most successful chick flicks, of all time. It was Pretty Woman that really catapulted Julia Roberts to fame, and she later went onto make another film with Richard Gere as the chemistry had been so good. It made over $450 million on a budget of $13 million, and got mostly good reviews from critics and audiences, going down as what some would call a cult film. Its been so popular for ten years now, and I imagine it will be just as popular in another ten years!
Memorable Quote:
Edward Lewis: So what happens after he climbs up and rescues her?
Vivian: She rescues him right back.
Basically, if you haven't seen it yet, then you should!
