Advantages: The acting - especially Ed Norton

Disadvantages: Not enough action

This is a 15 rated police drama that runs for two hours and contains some strong language and scenes of graphic violence.

This film is centred around four NYPD police officers: two brothers Ray Tierney (Edward Norton) and Fran Tierney Jnr (Noah Emmerich), the brother-in-law Jimmy Eagan (Colin Farrell) and the father Fran Tierney Snr (John Voigt). The story starts with the murder of four cops after which Fran Snr persuades his son Ray to leave his post in Missing Persons and lead a task force to investigate these murders. This film follows that investigation: an investigation which soon reveals police corruption. (I don't want to say much more than this otherwise I risk spoiling it.)

The acting in this is top draw. That's no surprise regarding Ed Norton who is, in my opinion, one of the best actors of our time; he portrays the emotion of the part excellently. As well as Ed Norton I was impressed with Colin Farrell - this is the best I had seen him act and he fitted well into this gritty drama.

Do not be fooled by the trailer - I thought this was going to be better than it was - I was slightly disappointed. The main reason I was disappointed is because I'm an action fan and the action scenes in this were few and far between. This film is mostly talking and not a lot else. With that in mind the story itself is fairly unoriginal, there are no plot twists and it ends leaving a number of questions unanswered. The only thing that is slightly different about this is that these officers are family and it shows how this affects their relationships. Considering this film is a gritty drama the quality of the story does not match that of the acting.

There are no special features on this DVD.

I felt this was a waste of a rental.
