Pride & Prejudice [2005] (DVD) ... released 06 February, 2006 at Universal Pictures Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Rightly winning wide acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, this latest take on Jane Austen’s classic Pride & Prejudice is a real, all-round triumph. The age-old story still holds real resonance, and it follows the tale of five sisters dealing with love, and the many trials and tribulations that brings. There are so many delights to director Joe Wright’s take on the story, and his direction is a strong place to start. In spite of having to condense the tale to fit a movie running time, he nonetheless injects a real energy and intelligence to his retelling, and he’s served supremely well by his cast. Backed up by strong support by the likes of Brenda Blethyn and Donald Sutherland, it’s Keira Knightley in the lead turn who’s a real surprise here. Her performance is a real joy, and very much at the core of the film’s success. The film inevitably draws comparison with the superb 1995 BBC adaptation, and while arguably it doesn’t quite scale the same peaks, it’s to the credit of the filmmakers that their version still holds strong. For this is a tremendously enjoyable drama, and one that should continue to find an audience for a long time to come. An excellent film.--Simon Brew

Crowned Review Pride & Prejudice [2005] (DVD): Austen, Meet Bronte (1955 words)

When I first heard they were producing another version of Pride & Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley, I must admit I had mixed feelings. I didn't see the point, as for me the BBC's 1995 version had put such a memorable stamp on it. It received fairly universal praise at the box office, however, which I admit did peak my curiosity. I had forgotten about it until this past weekend, when a friend and I rented it out to watch on a "girlie night". For the uninitiated, Pride & Prejudice is based on the novel by Jane Austen, and tells the story of the Bennett family. The arrival of two wealthy young men in their neighbourhood causes much social and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A Romance Favourite of Mine (372 words)

Pride & prejudice has always been one of my favourite books so I was really looking forward to seeing the latest film I had not yet seen starring Keira Knightly. I thought that although this film did vary from the original text to some extent, it was a really good production that had captured the essence and the purpose of the original book while breathing into a little bit of modern ideals and behaviours. Pride & Prejudice tells the story of hard hearted tomboy Elizabeth Bennet falling in love for the very first time with Mr Darcy, a man she previously believed to be beneath her moral standards. Mr Darcy is very rich and handsome, the ideal man by ...  Read the complete review

****Spoilers throughout**** Firstly I think I should point out that I did enjoy this film even though my review is going to be a fairly long list of criticisms. I'm nitpicking at this as an adaptation of a great novel rather than as a film in its own right because in the case of the latter, the film actually performs admirably, while for the former it lacks quite severely. The first thing that we see in this movie is a beautiful sunrise accompanied by birdsong and then the introduction of a gorgeous piano theme; it's a lovely opening to the movie and at this point I think my expectations got a little high because we're then greeted with my first ...  Read the complete review

It was like a Heavenly chorus in my hears…Working Title (the makers of Bridget Jones, Notting Hill et al), Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice, and film, all in one sentence. Wow. My Mum and I had been anticipating this one for a very long time. We practically leapt out of our seats in excitement when we first saw the trailers. I am a massive fan of British Films, the majority of which have been produced by Working Title - Shaun of the Dead, Bridget Jones, Four Weddings and A Funeral… to name but a few. I am also a huuuuge fan of costume dramas. Love them. Adore them. Will see them all and praise the books that spawned them. Pride and Prejudice ...  Read the complete review

Plot ======== Most people are very familiar with the plotline of this film having either read the Jane Austen novel on which the film is based or watching the BBC drama adaptation that was very popular. However not all are aware, in fact I discovered my husband didn't know the story so here is a little brief introduction to the film. It is set in Georgian 18th century England. The main characters in the novel are the Bennet family, Mr and Mrs Bennet and their five daughters. Because Mr Bennet has had no sons, on his death the family's house and money will pass by his wife and daughters to Mr Collins a cousin. Therefore Mrs Bennet's sole purpose in life is ...  Read the complete review
