Proof (DVD) ... Hopkins ... / DVD released 10 July, 2006 at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainm / Features of the DVD: PAL / Elegantly adapted from David Auburn's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Proof works on so many levels that it shines like a perfected equation. Gwyneth Paltrow previously played her role onstage, and returns here as Catherine, the troubled 27-year-old daughter of Robert, a once-brilliant mathematician (Anthony Hopkins, appearing in flashbacks and imagined visions) who has recently died. What Robert has left behind is an emotionally challenging legacy of genius, mental illness, and unfinished business in the Chicago home where Catherine had cared for him during his erratic final years. Catherine fears she may have inherited her father's unstable condition, and her sister Claire (Hope Davis) arrives from New York with smothering concern and a selfish but well-meaning agenda, while Robert's student and assistant Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal) hopes to find lasting proof of Robert's enduring genius in the piles of notebooks he left behind. Steeped in the authentic atmosphere of advanced academia, revelations of love, fear, regret, and potential recovery unfold with such graceful complexity that Proof plays like a thriller, with all the action taking place in the admirable hearts and minds of its characters. The film also has a lot to say about the potential tragedy of assuming mental illness where none exists, while leaving just enough doubt to keep you wondering -- a tribute to the exceptional performances of a first-rate cast, and particularly to Paltrow, whose reunion with Shakespeare in Love director John Madden proves equally rewarding for entirely different reasons. --Jeff Shannon

Jake Gyllenhaal plays Hal, one of Robert's ex-students, who is desperate to find a mathematical proof which the genius mathematician may have produced in a brief moment of mental clarity. Hal and Catherine have disputes over Robert and the proof he may, or may not, have produced, but the two end up sleeping together. After their night together, Catherine shares a notebook with Hal, which details a proof she claims to have developed. Follo...more

Crowned Review Proof (DVD): Yet another one has flown over the Cuckoos nest.. (1291 words)

Robert: You're gonna be okay. Catherine: I am? Robert: Yes. I promise you. The simple fact that we can talk about this together is a good sign. Catherine: A good sign? Robert: Yeah. Catherine: How could it be a good sign? Robert: Because crazy people don't sit around wondering if they're nuts. Catherine: They don't? Robert: No. They've got better things to do. Take it from me. A very good sign that you're crazy is an inability to ask the question, "Am I crazy?" Catherine: Even if the answer is yes? Robert: Crazy people don't ask, you see? Catherine: Huh. We all want to be clever. ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Proof that a good script does not always make a good film (1836 words)

Oh my god. That’s one hour and forty minutes of my life I am NEVER getting back…not that I was counting…no, I was falling asleep in the back of the cinema…or trying to fall asleep and forget the utter cheese-fest that was this film. I have no idea what the director or half the cast were thinking when they signed on to do this movie. Directed by John Madden, Proof has an all-star cast of Gwyneth Paltrow and Anthony Hopkins…its all downhill from here. Paltrow is Catherine, the daughter of a mathematical genius Robert, who recently kicked the bucket…not that you’d know because Catherine still has conversations with him. Oh and by the way, Robert was insane, and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Proof (DVD): Proof That Maths Can Be Quite Boring (807 words)
by - written on 22/06/09 (Very useful, 31 readings)

I watched this film a few months ago and was looking forward to watching it, probably less because of the storyline and more because of the cast. Proof is based on a Pulitzer-prize winning way, and was directed by John Madden. The director is also award-winning, after having worked on various popular films like Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Shakespeare In Love. When you add together a top cast, an award-winning play and an award-winning director, you should equal an award-winning film. Although Proof was enjoyable to watch and came across as being a quality production, something that I can't quite put my finger on was missing from it. Perhaps it was me, and ...  Read the complete review

Being quite an intelligent girl when I wanted to be and after having a small run of watching movies that don’t exactly use any of your brain power I felt I was ready to watch an intelligent movie. While reading up about the movie proof I thought it sounded like it would be just what I needed to get my brian moving so I decided to get it. What I found was a movie that tries it’s hardest to be good but doesn’t quite get there and this is why. ----- The Film: Catherine is a very clever young lady who has inherited her father’s mathematical brain. As her father (Robert) gets older and surprisingly more and more into mathematics she finds ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Proof (DVD): HMMMMMM=Mc Squared (491 words)

Imagine yourself standing on your own at a party. You’re into football, films and general life. However no one will talk to you as you know nothing about mathematics and everyone else does. So with drink in hand you’re forced to listen to countless debate amongst peers over the theory of pi. If this sounds like a miserable experience then I wouldn’t recommend taking a trip to see Proof. The film is an adaptation of a critically acclaimed stage play and boy does it show. Anthony Hopkins plays a brilliant but mentally disturbed mathematician coming who has died leaving many books of maths theory. His daughter Catherine (Gwyneth Paltrow) is left to ...  Read the complete review
