Newest Review: ... It doesn't really take too long to figure out what's going on. Gielgud, the famous writer, is creating the story as ... more  ... he lies awake at night, bothered by particularly gruelling rectal pain, staggering around, swearing, getting drunk. We aren't certain of his true relationships with the other characters, or even if they exist at all outside his head. He's not the narrator, he's the author. And because it's all his fantasy, the film doesn't have to pretend to be realistic. And it isn't. For instance, the locations in which the characters exist jump around all over the place. A film made by French art-house god Alain Resnais in 1977. This was his first English-language film, and is easier on the mind than the other Resnais films I've seen ('Hiroshima Mon Amour' and 'Last Year At Marienbad', although I saw them both years ago). Even though it was easier to get my head round than those two films, 'Providence' is still quite tricky, obstinately refusing to use any of those dull film conventions like realism and logical narrative.
