Advantages: 1930'S SETTING
Disadvantages: NOT ENOUGH VIOLENCE
Michael Mann directs this gangster thriller PUBLIC ENEMIES.
The film is set in 1930's Chicago and centres on Johnny Depp's character John Dillinger who is a brutal bank robber who will do anything for money. He decides to lead a gang through America to go on a crime spree. The F.B.I led by the head J Edgar Hoover played by Blly Crudup sends his best agent Melvin Purvis played by Christian Bale to find Dillinger. This takes Purvis to some of Dillinger's accomplacies like Pretty Boy Floyd played by Channing Tatum and Baby Face Nelson played by Stephen Graham to get answers though Dillinger keeps escaping. Meanwhile Dillinger tries to protect his lover played by Marion Coutillard. From here the plot fociuses on whether Purvis can find Dillinger and bring him to justice.
The premise of the film follows traditional gangster movies of the good trying to get the bad. However, the bad mostly suceed in this movie which gives it an extra edge. Depp is cool as usual as the bad, but excellent gangster Dillinger while Bale as the F.B.I agent Purvis is steady. The rest of the supporting cast are good, but particularly Cotillard who adds glamour to the movie.
The setting of 30's Chicago is superb and gives an atmosphere to the film as do the costumes which are very elegant. The action scenes are good though not enough violence or blood. The tone of the movie is quite dark and moody which comes across well on screen. The writing is cool and has some wonderful lines. The ending is dramatic and provides a few shocks.
The DVD extras include a behind the scenes, deleted scenes and a commentary.
Lasting nearly 2 hours with a 15 viewing certifcate and avaliable from AMAZON at £8.98 this is a good gangster movie.
