For Mark Hunter, moving to Arizona was one of the worst things that could have ever happened to him - not only did he lose many of his friends but he also found himself in a school where there is corruption, students are scared to say what they really think.

In the day time, Mark (Played by Christian Slater) is a shy boy, looking at him it is hard to imagine that a few hours later this innocent looking boy turns into "Hard Harry", a rebel pirate DJ.

Each night Hard Harry lights up the airways with his humour, becoming a role model for many of the kids of the sleepy town in Arizona. Some adults are disgusted by him, but many of the teenagers see him as someone that they can relate to - someone that they can share there problems with, and someone who can give them a laugh.

Nora (played by Samantha Mathis) is determined to find out who Hard Harry actually is, she sees him as inspirational and as someone who says out loud what she has always felt in herself.

Through the sheer frustration of his own life, Mark as Hard Harry encourages other kids to become individuals, and not what their corrupt head mistress wants them to be, and this leads to many of the kids rebelling - but then something goes wrong and one of the students kills himself after telling Harry about his problems live on the radio. The authorities seek to shut down this pirate radio show and to arrest Hard Harry, but Mark himself is disgusted at what has happened, wracked with guilt he shuts down the show himself... but what is to come of the other kids in the town?

Pump up the Volume is all about Free Speech, about being yourself and makes you laugh while making you think.

This was the movie that put Christian Slater into the big time movies, and got his name recognised. He portrays Mark well, as any high school teenager, and I really enjoyed this movie.

Made in 1990, this film has been given a 15 due to the extreme amount of se
xual references made in the movie and some nudity, and is approximately 98 minutes long. I managed to get the movie cheap in HMV, for £4.99, and I have since seen it for cheaper in many shops.

It's one of those movies that I wouldn't suggest that you buy, but that I would recommend watching if it happens to be on TV. I really enjoyed it, but it's not a "rush out and buy" movie.
