‘Dick tricks’ is what the creators of puppetry of the penis called their ‘art’. It is as it suggests, making images, such as hot dogs and hamburgers, out of male genitalia.

•• History ••
Years ago, a young Simon Morley from Australia was intrigued when his brother showed him an amazing trick with his penis – he formed it into a hamburger (details of how to do this later in the opinion). The legend goes that sibling rivalry then took over and practice became perfect, but did not make them blind. To quote from the website, it also ‘resulted in the evolution of a healthy repertoire of genital gesticulation’. In 1996 a calendar of the best dick tricks was produced called Puppetry of the Penis. In 1997 the calendar led to requests for live performances, so Simon asked his friend, David Friend to join him in bending, twisting and stretching his genitalia into absurd shapes for the pleasure of others.

The show debuted at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 1998, followed by national tours. In 2000 they appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, then a run in the West End and their international willy bending careers were born. They now do stage shows, a video (which is what this opinion is mainly about) and a book.

•• The Video ••
I was running out of ideas for Christmas presents when someone told me that the stage show was out on video. I decided to embarrass my aunt by asking her to buy it for me (but I’m sure she’ll borrow it soon). The video is available from most normal outlets. The RRP is £15.99, but Amazon are selling it for £13.99. The cover is very yellow showing two naked men (well, apart from their socks and trainers) in pushed back capes. Their bits are hidden by a pair of hands and the head of the other person – no it is NOT what you think!

There is also a Puppetry of the Penis book retai
ling at £9.99, which is £7.99 at Amazon and a Puppetry of the Penis DVD retailing at £19.99, which is £18.99 at Amazon.

The video is 50 minutes long, and basically this is 50 minutes of watching two naked men twist their genitals into different shapes. Now, you may think that this is either pornographic, or boring, but instead it is extremely funny. The show is suitable for both men and women (there are both in the audience), as it is not at all sexual and is extremely witty. They are naturally funny guys and strangely enough you get used to their nudity on stage in the end and just concentrate on the images. The video is certificate 15, which just proves my point.

This is a recording of one of their Melbourne stage shows, and the camera spends a lot of time recording the audiences’ reactions, which can be as hilarious as the show itself. Watching the women wide eyed, and the men cringe could be a show in itself.

Now to the difficult bit. I want to try and explain why it is worth buying this video without giving too much away. They start off on stage with their capes on and hiding their bits, I presume not to shock too much initially, as it is disconcerting seeing naked men just wandering around the place. They do a few limbering exercises which involves stretching the scrotum. They then build it up slowly (excuse the pun), until it seems quite natural to see testicles adapted into hamburger buns. At one point they ask a member of the audience to help them on stage (REMINDER: never sit near the front of this sort of show). This is one of the funniest bits of the show, and had me in stitches (don’t worry it wasn’t cringe making for the poor girl). I hope I won't give too much away by mentioning a couple of other tricks: the sea anemone and the Eiffel tower (demonstrated on the Euro trash awards recently). The party trick at the end is fabulous, but I haven’t been able to get my partner to mimic it (
yet).

•• The hamburger ••
As promised earlier, here are the instructions for making a hamburger from the male genitals. The reason I am able to give you these clear instructions is not only because I have good memory for interesting facts, but also because of a little yellow book called ‘D.I.Y. Dicktrick Handbook’ that comes with the video. This gives instructions on the following ‘puppets’: wedding ring, wristwatch, baby bird (excellent!) and hamburger (my favourite).

1. Place the testicles in your fingertips and spread them apart.
2. Roll the penis between the testicles
3. Turn a 90 degree angle
4. Squeeze the testicles and hold like a hamburger.

If you have a good sense of imagination, you will be visioning the result right now. There is a tackle injury disclaimer in the book, which is worth mentioning, as I am sure this cannot do you good, even if it is fun to turn your testicles into poppy seed buns!

•• The website ••
www.puppetryofthepenis.com If you want to get a feel for the content of the shows or video, visit the website. You can get more about the background, see some photos from the show (willies excluded), buy some merchandise and basically have some fun. They are also auditioning for new stars for their shows, so any exhibitionists out there can apply.

•• Conclusion ••
This video is great fun! I have already shown clips of it to two sets of visiting friends of both genders. It would be a laugh to watch this on a girls’ night in with a bottle of wine (well, beer as I don’t like wine). Highly recommended.

Major, I enjoyed your comments wanting to see Puppetry of the Penis. I hope you can get your hubby to watch the DVD. The show IS really funny, fun and nonsexual. And no pain.

I so wanted to go and see this, but my husband crossed his legs, winced and refused to go when I explained to him what the show's all about. Hadn't realised it was on video. Think I might buy him it for Christmas. ;-)

Offy, I completely enjoyed your funny and intelligent op. Under the category of more than you want to know (perhaps), I add this: over and over, people's reactions are "OUCH! That must hurt!" but, strangely enough, it doesn?t (in my opinion). I would never have thought of penis puppetry, so I'm glad these guys did; it certainly demythologizes the penis, at least. And it puts male genitals in perspective for both genders. Instead of the sacred male genitals we have something akin to the funny shapes a balloon artist makes. I think it's hilarious. A woman I know wants to learn to do them, a clever and smart idea. Maybe women should seek men who can be relaxed and irreverent about their own genitals. Thanks for the op.
