... Longden) and journalist Jimmy Hall (Sid James) at his side, perhaps the only two people he can trust, Quatermass intends to blow this conspiracy wide open. "Quatermass 2" is the sequel to 1955's "The Quatermass Xperiment", Hammer's first proper horror film, and is often cited as the first sequel to have '2' in the title. This isn't a particularly great honour, as you might guess, but "Quatermass 2" does have a lot going for it, especially when it is easily a better film than its pred...more

Premium Review Quatermass II (DVD): "Quatermass 2" (1957) (668 words)

Rating:

After Quatermass' doomed rocket experiment, the short-tempered professor (Brian Donlevy) has turned his attention to the colonisation of the moon by designing and bidding for the construction of a base that utilises huge air-sealed domes. However, due to the massive funding required, his proposals continue to be dismissed, and it is only when a volley of unusual meteorites land on Earth does his attention turn. With his assistant Marsh (Bryan Forbes), he drives 90 miles north to Winnerden Flats, the area the meteorites supposedly fell. But what they discover there is all the more confusing - someone has built Quatermass' own moon base ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Watch Out For The "V'" Signs...... (1443 words)

Rating:

Science fiction was a staple element in the films & television of the 1950s. Hammer Films had purchased the rights to Nigel Kneale's BBC serial "The Quatermass Experiment" & has produced their own film version which had been released in 1955. When Kneale penned a Quatermass sequel for the BBC Hammer were quick to step in & purchase the rights for that as well. Kneale worked on the film version of his story alongside director Val Guest. Plot summary: Returning to his observatory Quatermass narrowly avoids collision with another car driven by a woman. Her male passanger has been injured by something which has fallen from ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Quatermass II (DVD): just as good as the first (135 words)
by - written on 31/12/00 (Useful, 48 readings)

Released two years after THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT, this sequel again starred Brian Donlevy as Professor Bernard Quatermass. This time he is fighting aliens which have come to Earth from an asteroid which is in orbit around our planet. I enjoyed this movie just as much as the first - I'm a sucker for these old science fiction movies. One of the thing I like is looking out for actors and actresses playing small roles, who would later become famous in their own right. One to watch out for here is Sid James (or 'Sidney' James as he is billed here) as a lowlife named Jimmy Hall. Val Guest again directed, returning from the first movie, although ...  Read the complete review
